I'm looking to major in Defense and Strategic Studies at USMA and am at a crossroads between AP Physics 1 and AP Macroeconomics to take for my senior year of high school. I have never taken physics or economics before, so my familiarity with either is the same. Which class would be more beneficial for the major I'm going to pursue at USMA?

Physics. Although Economics may be be more closely related to your intended major, Physics is much better preparation for the core STEM curriculum, which is required of all cadets. And you might change your mind about major.

As a former AFA Physics Instructor, I agree with jl123. All cadets and midshipmen graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree -- emphasis on the science. The core curriculum at AF, Navy and Army include mandatory Physics courses along with mathematics, engineering, etc. Good luck with your preparations for USMA!

I’m going to say that you cannot validate AP Physics 1 - it is algebra based physics. I don’t know off the top of my head what if any course can validate physics, but I would consider this. Not tracking AP Econ courses for validation either. However like others said it is still great prep for physics here and drives home conceptual ideas that physics here might skim.

Physics. You will take Physics or place out of physics at USMA. TAKE THE PHYSICS NOW.
