Hello! As many of you probably know, the AP tests are quickly approaching! I took two AP classes this year, English and Calculus AB. I am feeling very confident going into the English exam as I have taken several practice tests and gotten decent scores but am very nervous about the Calculus test. Due to Covid and learning from home, I basically had to learn calculus by myself using all that YouTube has to offer :) I have taken some practice tests and not done as well as I had hoped. I know the Naval Academy and other SA's do not accept credits from AP tests but do they look at the scores? I am debating taking the Calculus exam due to the possibility of getting a poor score. Should I still take the test? Does anyone have any advice for this situation? Thank you so much!

The Naval Academy actually does accept credits from AP examinations, but you have to score pretty well on them to validate any courses. Getting a poor score on an AP test will not prevent you from getting an appointment and I do not believe the academy even looks at your scores until you send them. Go ahead and take the test. If you end up at another school besides USNA, your score might allow you to skip paying thousands of dollars for a class.

Here is the link for their AP course validation. Basically you need either a 4 or a 5 to validate a class. Validation exams will be given during plebe summer as well. Some departments accept the AP credit, others do not (notably Physics, but can validate over plebe summer).

Are you class of 2025? Or prospective 2026? If 2025, your PTR packet will have a link to the Academic Background System (ABS) where it will outline what you will do about possibly validating any courses - which includes online tests that you need to take before reporting. As someone else said, though, go ahead and take the AP tests - if you get even a 3, it might get you credits at another school, if not USNA. All schools are different.

Take the test! if you are in 2026, it won't hurt just in case you choose to not to go to an academy. AP test can save thousands of dollars. If you are 2025 and received an appointment, I'd still take it since you only need a 4 to validate courses. Good Luck on those tests and get that 5!
