Next year I’m going to be a sophomore and am debating weither or not to take AP World history. Next year I’m going to have a lot of extra curricular activities and am going to be in all honors and AP Computer science. Should I try to take it or just take World History honors?

I heard Ap World is the most boring ap ever. I'm in U.S and it's pretty interesting. If you have a good school system I would take it. I think on the awards website they like an advanced U.S History(i could be wrong). Best of luck!

If you don’t think you’ll be able to manage it, I would say don’t take it. It would probably be best to focus on the math and science classes then to stress about a history class. Just my opinion though. I don’t think it will make or break your application either way, unless you get a bad grade in AP world history.

My DS did both. Doable.

I took it and loved it. Talk to upper classmen who took it before you and ask what they would do.

I personally found AP World History to be one of the most important classes I've ever taken. The subject matter isn't why it's the most important to me, though it certainly is fascinating and I loved it; rather, AP World History taught me how to write well. If you take any AP classes that aren't AP Calculus or AP Chemistry, you will need to be able to write well. AP World History prepares you to do this. The students in my later AP classes who didn't take AP World History really struggled due to the amount of writing, especially argumentative writing, that we had to do.

Tl;dr: take AP World History--it'll help you out in a major way later on.

If you have any questions about other AP classes, shoot. I've taken AP World History, English Language and Composition, US History, Computer Science Principles, Statistics, US Government and Politics, Biology, and Psychology, and I got a five on all of the exams besides AP Bio, which I got a 4 on, so I'm pretty well-versed with almost all the common AP classes.

To add on, I've also taken AP Physics and AP U.S, currently taking AP Calc, AP Lit, AP Gov and AP Environmental.

I got a 1 on Physics and U.S though... so probably best not to listen to me.

I've never once heard of anyone having a good experience in AP Physics or AP Chem, so I think your opinions on AP classes are still valid.

I took AP Physics when we were online. The teacher told us it was going to be even more difficult than it already was, especially since we can't do any of the labs we were supposed to do if we were in person.

I’m not worried about the content I’m just worried about the amount of homework and studying. How many hours a night did you have to do homework/study for it?

I’m actually taking AP world this year and in my opinion it is actually very interesting. However there is a LOT of information to know and remember and for me at least a lot of homework. I have the AP exam coming up in May so I am studying for that. If you don’t like history I suggest you don’t take this class.

I like history a lot actually but I’m trying to get into some leadership and extra curricular activities next year and am unsure if I will be able to keep up with all the homework

What was the workload like?
For my class, every unit (there are 9) we have a reading guide that is about 20 pages of questions to answer. With that comes about 40 pages of reading to answer those questions. On top of that we have assignments daily relating to a specific thing in the unit like the events of the Cold War or the Mongols conquests. We have practiced SAQs (short answer questions), LEQs (long essay questions) and DBQs (document based questions). Most of our tests are multiple choice but some have been written like the examples above. If you do decide to take the class I recommend Heimlers History YouTube channel. He has videos for every chapter and topic. Hope this helps!

Thank you!!

I've been taking it this year and have the exam coming up in a few weeks. Based off of my experience its been very manageable and compared to some of my other classes pretty easy. Some people have already said this but it also has really helped me with figuring out how to do a timed writing (they're called DBQ's in AP World History) and has allowed me to learn the themes throughout history which will certainly help me in future history classes. I recommend you do it!

I didn't spend very much time on homework, despite the fact that I did thorough outlines of each chapter of our textbook. I spent maybe an hour each night on homework for World History (on average, some days I had no homework, sometimes I had a bit more than usual). It'll depend on your teacher for sure, but you likely won't have too much homework. I did AP World History as my first AP class and while working part time as a dishwasher, spending ~2 hours in the gym each day, and still engaging in my other extracurriculars. If you're even considering a service academy, you probably have the work ethic to deal with World History.

There's lots of online resources that will help you, like Crash Course World History (which I don't particularly like, but I still admit is a good resource for studying).

What was the workload like?
It really depends on the teacher and how they teach it. Mine was very textbook dependent, but if you can find other ways to supplement the material (quizlets/YouTube/other textbooks) then you will do okay. Expect to do lots of multiple choice and AP style writings. If this is your first social studies AP, you may struggle a bit, but in time you will get it.

Great point also. It helped prepare me tremendously for other AP class writing as well as essays in general. Ultimately elevated my writing style as a whole.

I’ll throw in my 2 cents. My DS didn’t take AP History. He chose to focus on science and math AP courses because those were his strengths. He was also involved in tons of other activities. My daughter (not a cadet) took AP History several years ago, and it was the bane of her junior year. Hours of daily homework. I remember thinking how crazy it was. So pick your strong suits and go from there.
