Hello! I am currently a Junior and am working on forecasting for classes next year. I am focused on selecting classes that will optimize my chances of getting accepted to an SA! I have taken Latin for the past three years, but this year my school cancelled the class. I know for USNA they recommend at least two years of a language but I have read that colleges favor taking a language all four years. Should I enroll in another language, but at a beginner level, or would my efforts be better spend taking an advanced science or math class? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

@Alex874, one person’s opinion here. Your Latin classes may already fit the bill as a language equivalent because Latin is the basis for all the romance languages. If USNA is your goal, opt for taking an advanced math or science class. Then do well. The advanced math class might also help you during the SAT/ACT. One year in a beginning language class, say Spanish, isn’t worth learning much more than “como se llama, usted”? I know how beginning languages are taught, at least in California. Take an advanced math class. Good luck.

In the USNA application, there’s a prompt to click requesting recommendations for Math, English, and Other (subject immaterial) teachers. So only list teachers that you have good rapport (don’t list one where you forgot to submit three homeworks). There’s also a prompt for the CFA evaluator and guidance counselor. There’s a specific entry for language(s): Language, skill level / fluency, and how you acquire them. Physics, Chemistry, Calculus in your records will make you more competitive in admissions board. Hope this helps.

Each applicant is a different case and therefore unique. Generally, more math or Lab science courses will not only strengthen your application, but will also help you succeed at the USNA. Your 3 Latin course are probably fine. Consider Statistics another Lab Science or another STEM course-if possible take AP or Honors level. Depending on your list of courses, SAT/ACT scores, an advanced writing course can be beneficial too.
