I have been researching both the USNA and the USMA. I hope to apply to both SLE and Summer Seminar this winter.

However, although I know it is possible, how does one apply to both academies beyond the basic application that you fill out for the summer programs?

Namely, how do you get nominations for both?

Allow me to draw out a scenario. Lets say that this candidate is more interested in the USMA itself. However, he is not sure if he would rather spend 4 years at the USNA, so that he could have the option to be a fighter pilot, or a fixed wing pilot, as opposed to the Army helicopter. Due to wanting to have options he would like to apply to both. However HE STILL PREFERS WEST POINT. Would applying for nominations for both, possibly cause the scenario where you are only granted one (USNA), and then are stuck with that? Or would you pretty much get both or none?

Hope this makes sense, and in my quest for options, I don't want to loose my first choice as one itself.

Thanks

Depends on how competitive your MOC district is.

My son got multiple nominations from the same MOC as it wasn’t a competitive district. Other more competitive districts it is hard to get one.

Research and solidify your first choice and be able to answer why you chose that one. You might get several nominations to different SAs.

There are many, many threads on this. Check both your SA forums of interest and the Nominations forum.

Every elected official can choose their own way to run their process: applications, deadlines, info requested, interviews/no interviews, panel, etc. Some may choose to collaborate within their state, agree to not duplicate names across the 2 Senator and 1 Rep slate. Or, the elected official may state their policy is not to give multiple noms to any one candidate, asking for a ranking of the candidate’s SAs, and dispensing just 1 nom as they see fit. Or, they could cheerfully give multiple noms. You have zero control over all of that.

You have to put together the best SA applications(s) you can, submit the best nom applications you can per each elected official’s guidance, and be sure to apply to every nom source for which you are eligible, including the VP at DOD SAs.

Be clear and consistent in your written work and in oral interviews about your SA preferences, with a well-reasoned rationale at the ready.

And yes, it does happen, an applicant might rank their SAs and get a nom to an SA they haven’t even applied for.

Take your best shot at this somewhat arcane process.
