Hello,

I am currently waiting to hear back from USMA for an appointment. I also know of a person in my school with similar grades and extra curriculars as me. We both attended SLE and have finished our USMA applications.

However, he only received a senator nomination while I received both a senator and congressional nomination. Does having two Cadet candidates within one school affect chances of appointment? Our grade has 1000 kids total.

The school doesn’t matter. It’s the MOC that nominate. Every member of Congress has a slate of up to 10 CCs. Every 3Q CC on that slate compete with each other for an appointment, and those that did not win the slate get placed on the NWL. Last year, my public school has 3 go to USMA, and we usually don’t have much in the way of military interest.

I’m seeing this as I browse through new posts, but having two nominations certainly won’t hurt as you’re competing on two slates. Secondly, if it brings you any reassurance I’m one of two in my graduating class (also of 1000) to be appointed to USNA, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the other candidate at your school as multiple appoints from the same school are possible. Good luck, and hope you win a slate!

Do not worry about your friends, neighbors and other people in your school. Sometimes 2-4 kids a year will get into the same service academy from the same high school. Building the perfect class is not as simple as you might think. Let this one roll off your back...and move on.

Focus on controlling what you can control: submit or having submitted your absolutely best packet; keep working out and getting good grades; and enjoy these last few months with your family.

My son and another boy in his HS received nom from the same source. They were both appointed to usma. When we heard the other boy was admitted we assumed that was the end of the road. 2 days later he received his bfe.

Districts matter, not schools. If your classmate lives in the same district, you are competing on the same district MOC slate. If your classmate goes to your school, but lives in another district, you are competing on different slates. Irrespective of district, you will be in competition with your classmate for QA or AA appointments.

It's all about the WCS score. Highest score wins.

We both live in the same district, but he did not receive a congressional nomination while I did receive one.

If you were competing on the same slate, that presents a minor challenge. On top of the points raised above, it is important to know that a member of Congress can only have 5 actual appointments at the Academy at one time spread out over the four classes. That does not mean that multiple candidates cannot come from the same district, particularly given the other nomination sources.

Every state is different, but in some cases the MOCs coordinate with the senators to spread out the candidates between the slates and give the most opportunity to everyone. This is possibly a case in point, assuming you and your classmate are highly qualified and only one of you received a district nom. Theoretically you are in a better position because you are competing against others in your district while your classmate is competing state-wide. Best of luck.

DS has a senator nom and a representative nom for USNA, but needs a medical waiver. Does that automatically put him behind other candidates on the slate? Excellent CFA, great service records, great ACT (33), sports, etc---like so many candidates.

He needs the waiver to compete on the slate. If he doesn’t get the waiver, he won’t be considered.

I will encourage DS to contact Mr. Mullen. Is waiver status updated on DoDMERB or is it the academy site that will be updated?

My son learned of his waiver approval on either USNA or DoDMERB portal. IIRC they both updated about the same time.

I am not sure what Mr. Mullen can help with … the decision is made by SA waiver authority (my son needed additional Supe approval). But he can let you know better than I can.

USMA will hold the slate until the waiver issue is adjudicated. There is a date later in the Spring.
Not having a waiver by 31 January does not mean one will not be offered an appointment.
@MullenLE can answer any questions about this.

Also, it is best not to focus too much on other people who you know have nominations from the same source. There are so many factors at play. Worry about putting the best possible packet together and enjoying these last few months with your family.
