Appointments / LOA

We are a month away from the first very, very early appointments and LOAs. There are plenty of kids with LOAs that never receive a nomination and, therefore, no appointment.

I'm just a candidate, so I have no idea, but I swear I read here that USAFA gives out the least amount of LOAs compared to the other academies. Maybe I'm completely wrong though.

In my experience you are absolutely correct for past years. There is a new Director of Admissions though, so it could change.

How do you secure a nomination before October? Any tips on that? That seems very early in the nomination process but I am only familiar with my state.

Go re-read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum to refresh on various nom sources. Service-connected noms can be given as soon as the candidate submits documentation. All who are eligible receive those.

Elected officials officials may have a brisk timetable and get their slates done well before they are due to the SA.

Is it possible for USAFA to give an appointment with a Presidential before a cadet applies for Congressional noms?

If the candidate is fully qualified (medical/DoDMERB; athletic/CFA; academic/scholastic, all other evaluated elements), and has a nom in hand, it is possible.

Here’s the “but.” Only 100 appointments can be charged to that nom source. If there are 600 fully qualified applicants with that nom, that is the “competitive nom bucket” for that nom category. USAFA may choose to wait until all applications are in before they choose the appointments which will be charged to the Presidential nom. Or they might not, if they see someone they want and decide to offer the appointment now rather than later.

The SAs encourage candidates to apply to all nom sources for which they are eligible. This gives the SA flexibility in which nom source to charge an appointment to. And, the dust may not settle on where those appointments are charged until cycle end, and appointees may never know. And it doesn’t matter!

Yes, however you will have no idea what nomination was used. Admissions "builds" a class using all available tools.

Here is an example. My son had a Presidential nom initially. He received an appointment the first week of November, before his other noms were announced. He eventually had several noms. There is no way to know what source was eventually charged, nor does it matter.
