Appointments Remaining?

Last year, there was a kid offered CGAS a little over two weeks before reporting day! While it is not true for ‘traditional’ universities, when people decline a slot, it definitely can open up a spot for someone else.

Does that mean there’s a chance for prep scholars to be promoted to full appointments as well?

That would be extremely unusual. The people selected for prep school are selected for a reason. It means Admissions saw that they were qualified in most areas and had a great packet, BUT they felt that an additional year would be beneficial to succeed at USCGA. Usually, an applicant is selected when perhaps their math or science grades weren't quite as high.

I also don't think it is necessarily true that someone declining their appointment opens up a spot for someone else. USCGA offers more appointments than they have spots. Based on historical numbers, they have an idea of approximately what percentage will accept the offer. That is also why some people are offered a spot on the waitlist. The number of people who decline or who do not get a medical waiver will definitely influence how many (if any) are taken off the waitlist. For the class of 2024, nobody was pulled from the waitlist. That doesn't mean that nobody declined. It just means that enough people accepted to fill the class size that USCGA was looking for that year.

My DS who was deferred from EA was not accepted. Saw Bear’s Den update. He will go to MMI on a tennis scholarship. Good luck to all the other applicants waiting
so he is doing prep school? if so congratulations!

I'm sorry...but CONGRATULATIONS on his tennis scholarship at MMI! Best of Luck on his alternate, but equally important path!!

I’ve never heard of that, and as someone above commented, CGAS scholars are appointed for many reasons.
It's definitely possible, happened to my brother in 2019, bumped up from CGAS to full 4 weeks prior to swab summer. I'm sure they have their list of possible CGAS candidates who can be considered for full appointments should there be empty slots. If anything it would make sense that a CGAS candidate would usually be "more qualified" than someone on the waitlist. Definitely not something candidates should expect to happen, but it is definitely possible.
