Appropriate to Mention to RC?

I am very anxious as I’m sure many other people are and I wanted to ask this forum before I emailed my Regional Commander. Would it be permissible for me to tell my RC that if I am not offered an appointment I would be interested in the AOG scholarship? I have already been accepted to Marion Military Institute and I could let him know that as well, so he would be aware that I do have a solid backup plan in case this year does not work out.

Giving due diligence to anonymity towards RC's the best policy is to be up front and honest, especially to your RC because RC is the direct link between the Admission board and the applicant. They are well trained and equipped to give you sound advise. As I mentioned before they can also be your best advocate. From what I hear, they receive 100's of emails every week... so don't be shy and be honest and be pro-active. Good luck!

The RC is an Admissions Officer and calculates the WCS score for candidates in the region.

In my opinion a candidate should contact their RC a minimum of three times (same goes for civilian colleges):
  1. At the beginning of the application process to introduce yourself and express your interest
  2. At approximately the middle of the process to reiterate your interest and to explain anything in the application that needs reinforcement, such as activities that don't fit cleanly into standard boxes.
  3. Near the end of the process if an appointment has not yet been offered to reinforce your desire to attend USMA
At any of these points it is appropriate to express your interest in an AOG scholarship, USMAPS, etc as part of your desire to attend USMA and become a military officer, but I think it works best at the middle to end of the process, perhaps after the first or second wave.

Any correspondence with the RC should be professional, well written, and brief - write all that is necessary, not more.

I would wait. It is early in the admissions cycle. You already have an acceptance to MMI.
Wait until early April. See how you are doing then.

Obviously there's people on here who are far more qualified than me, but by the end of January my senior year, I still had not received an appointment (I know that's not late or anything), but I emailed my RC respectfully asking about my chances and he said that although I was qualified, my chances were slim because there was a candidate who was just extraordinary. So, I directly asked what my shots were at going to USMAPS - he obviously told me that I couldn't go there because my stats were too high, and so he asked about my interest in the AOG program. He said not too many people are interested in it, but that if I was, he'd put my name down and send it up. Fast forward a few months, I graduated the SAP program at Marion as an AOG and am now at West Point. So maybe...shoot your shot.

Thank you for your advice. I emailed him to inquire about it and he seemed to appreciate my initiative. At some point a month or so from now if I’m still not offered an appointment, should I ask him what my chances are?

I probably wouldn't ask about chances specifically because that can be hard to gauge. I'd say you could just express how willing you would be to go to civil prep if an appointment is not offered and then leave it at that.

Yes, but since you just made contact you should probably wait until mid-April if you have not gotten BFE or TWE. By then many candidates will have accepted/declined appointments and the RC will be able to give you a more precise answer.

As military officers RC's tend to be more direct and forthcoming than admissions officers at civilian colleges. They know exactly where you stand at any given point in time. USMA admissions is highly objective for most appointments - your WCS score will determine your chances.

Your RC knows exactly what your chances are now that the application window has closed. It would not hurt to reach out and ask him where you sit and reiterate your desire for an AOG scholarship.
