Are W-2 earnings from DFAS of students exempt from NYS taxes?

I have a 3rd year student who received a 2019 W-2 but no entries in the state wages and state withholding boxes. Is it exempt from NY taxes?

Sometimes the DFAS W-2 has a second page of W-2 with state info. Are you sure you have the whole W2?

Is the student filing independent?

Hopefully there is a second page.

Unless someone knows an exemption I don’t know about - he should include the gross on his IT-201.

Spoke to his dad who has all of his stuff - no other pages. It was actually sealed from DFAS's printing machine.
Ok thanx.

Must be cadet sailing at Military Sealift Command, getting paid by DFAS.

defense accounting and finance service ... my son’s W-2 from USNA was from there as well. As is my neighbors pension and other military folks I have done taxes for.

I always assumed it was where they all are from. Someone else can correct me.

Yes I know what DFAS is obviously. I'm a DoD employee at the moment. I don't need you to tell me what DFAS is. this is in the USMMA forum NOT usna. Your son's income from DFAS is 1/3 of O-1 Base minus the loan for uniforms etc. I don't think that's relevant at all.

LOL I was merely telling you that all the W2s I have seen are from DFAS.

Sorry you took offense.

I don't need your apologies either. Why you're posting in the USMMA forum is beyond me.
