Any recommendations on whether newly commissioned Army officers are expected to get a mess dress right away, or whether the dual-purpose ASU w/bow tie is sufficient in their early days? With the new "Greens" coming out, not sure what to focus on for a commissioning gift.

Newly commissioning officers should purchase the new uniform.

Regarding the Mess uniform. It is customary for Field Grade Officers to have the uniform - considered a right of passage to mark the transition from directly leading Soldiers to leading through subordinate leaders. But, it is not mandatory.

However, plenty of company grade officers own mess uniforms. I never met an officer stationed in Korea as a LT who did not own a Mess uniform for example.

If the LT is purchasing the greens, buying him/her the mess would be a fantastic gift, and undoubtedly much appreciated IMO.

Thank you. I had a same question.

For those reading...LTs stationed in Korea have access to Korean tailors who make very nice Mess uniforms that are relatively easy on the bank account...that is why they usually come home with them.

Wow.. Thank you again!!
I saw one at Dragon Hill Hotel in Young San. I will make sure I will check it out when I go over there for business trip. :)

Well, when it was our time, our DS went out and got his own ASU and additional ACUs. So, when it was time for him to get his first apartment, we took care of the Bed Bath and Beyond bill. In hindsight, it would have been cheaper to get the ASU for him. LOL.

This is what I found out so far.

Okay.. I talked to a guy at Dragon Hill Hotel.
ASU $395
M/Blue $495

If you are thinking about getting it from Youngsan then please note that there isn't much. Most of shops are closed or moved out.

I also went to PX at Camp Humphreys. In the same building there is one tailoring shop that I could find.
Talked to a guy and asked for price. He said $400 but I didn't ask the price for M/Blue.

I don't and can't negotiate the price. ;-) However, you can ask for discount??!?
