Hey there! I am currently in my MS2 year for AROTC (contracted) and applied for 3 of the summer internships that are offered through our battalion. I was wondering if anyone has participated in AROTC summer internships before and if they could describe the waiting process and experiences they had through their internships.

Hi! My DD did a summer internship at C5ISR at Fort Belvoir after her MS2 year. She said it was a great experience, she learned a lot, and was well paid (unlike one she did during her spring semester as an MS2. She interned with a handful of West Point students and a couple of ROTC students from other Battalions. She got to rub elbows with a three-star general and attended some get togethers while there too!

I don't know what your interests are (hers are in international politics/policy, specifically cybersecurity policy), but there are a ton of think tanks and government organizations that offer summer internships, and I wouldn't limit yourself to just what is offered through your Battalion. However, also check with your college/university...In addition to getting an internship that paid well for the summer in her area of interests, she also applied for and landed a Fellowship from her university that provides financial awards to students who are doing summer internships, to help defray of the costs of travel and living expenses.

Good luck and I hope you find a great internship!

Do you have any suggestions on locating these internships I could pass on to my son who is currently an MSII? Was hers advertised through ROTC? Offered by her Battalion? Other places to locate them? Thanks!

Don't limit the search to "army" or specifically "military" internships. DS#2 had internships (paid) at Goddard Spaceflight Center and NASA Jet Propulsion Labs during his college years. In both, situations there were xROTC Cadets/Mids with similar positions. They may even have a bit of a leg up in getting the spots.

Best of Luck!

I'll ask her where she got the ideas to look and report back to you. I know her school is big on internships and she may have gotten some help from her school's advisor.

Do you have a Google machine?

Thanks so much! I know he's been looking, but sometimes people have other avenues that don't always come to mind. Appreciate your response.

Lots of people in my NROTC applied for internships on their own, and were really successful... especially leveraging the fact their were MIDNs/Cadets, which interviewers loved. Congress, State House/Senate, DoD, local defense contractors etc. Definitely not too late to apply. Good luck!

My DD sent me an email last evening of some agencies/areas she looked at for internships and as another poster indicated, leveraging that your DS is in ROTC is very much of interest to interviewers. Also, keep in mind my DD's interested in International Security Policy/Cybersecurity/Intelligence, so many of these are slanted to her areas of interest, but perhaps some idea will spur another in his area of interest.

My DD does not go to Univ of TX, but she referenced the attached list, which is a HUGE list of National Security Internship opportunities in DC.

For the White House: https://www.whitehouse.gov/get-involved/internships/
and https://www.whitehouse.gov/get-invo...se-internship-program/internship-departments/

In addition to what is on the attached list, some additional Thinktanks (visit their websites and they typically will have a place to apply for internships):
  • American Foreign Policy Council
  • Aspen Institute
  • Atlantic Council
  • Bipartisan Policy Center
  • Carnegie Endowment for International Peace CATO Institute
  • Center for Immigration Studies
  • Center for the National Interest
  • Center for Public Justice
  • Competitive Enterprise Institute
  • Council on Foreign Relations
  • Center for Strategic and International Studies German Marshall Fund
  • Hudson Institute
  • International Center for Research on Women Migration Policy Institute
  • National Endowment for Democracy
  • New America Foundation
  • Peterson Institute for International Economics Pew Research Center
  • Third Way
  • Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
I hope that helps!
