While I'm still waiting on an admissions decision I want to finalize backup plans. Long story short, if not offered admission to USAFA I would attend an in-state university and reapply with the Class of 2026. The university has an ROTC program but it is Army. Would it be beneficial to join this since it is still leadership-based and aimed at a military pathway or would it be better to find other leadership roles and allocate my time elsewhere such as academics and volunteering. Wasn't sure if the lack of participation in ROTC, even though it is Amry, would hurt my chances of getting into USAFA.

I had the same opportunity in my college and it took a while and a lot of emails/ conversations and research to get a reputable answer. Long story short you can attend an ARMY ROTC program and reapply for USAFA the following year ONLY IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT ANY MONEY OR SCHOLARSHIPS from the program. Otherwise you will only be able to apply for USMA the following year. This is due to the branch that has begun paying for you has invested resources into you and they cannot take that back. So yes you can, but if you accept money/scholarships you will only be able to apply for USMA. Likewise if you attended an AFROTC you could only attend USAFA. Hope this helps!

Are you sure about this? I know a someone on a Navy ROTC scholarship who applied for both USNA and USAFA, got into both, then chose to attend USAFA

Yes, at least with the Army because I had a ROTC scholarship that I had to decline because of this exact thing.
