AROTC award presentation

My sons have been awarded a 3 yr AD scholarship. Who do I get in touch with to present it at their senior breakfast? I tried looking in the "additional information" tab in their application but the sites are not working.

I suggest reaching out to your son’s guidance counselor or the school principal. At least in my DD’s case the school made the arrangements, and the principal reached out to make sure that we would be there since it was done at a morning assembly. It turned out that the closest battalion committed but did not show up. Neither did the Air Force representative for another student. However they did have a school counselor who was former active duty and current national guard announce both my daughter’s and the young man who would attend the Air Force academy, and I could not have been more proud, and she was not expecting anything so it was not a disappointment that it was a school counselor. Apparently this had happened to them in past years and the school was prepared.

My DD got an email from her university ROTC saying if they were in-state the ROO would try to present it himself. We thought that was a very kind offer. Unfortunately, not only are we not in-state, but being homeschooled, my DD didn't have any sort of awards presentation. Instead, we displayed her scholarship folio on her senior table at graduation last weekend.

My DS was informed by his school's LTC that the Army would not allow him to visit his high school's awards presentation. COVID stinks! Luckily an interim assistant principal volunteered to present the award. My son is ok either way. This is something, however, that I was really looking forward to. Oh well.

My DS 1 graduated two years ago from a public high school in WA, and enlisted USMC. A woman at church congratulated his choice and opined that she was disappointed that our high school did not recognize her son’s enlistment the year before. Our high school DID recognize SA and ROTC at senior awards night and is very focused on college success (93% go on to 4 year colleges). So, I wrote an email to the high school point of contact and principal suggesting that they recognize at graduation any student dedicating themselves to national service - whether military or not (i.e Americorps). The solution came in the principal’s address during the graduation ceremony, when she asked all students devoting themselves to national service (and she listed branches of military as well as Americorps specific to our graduating class) to stand up and be recognized - there was a roar and lots of clapping. The high school hadn’t ever done recognition on the enlisted or non- scholarship side. I think it was especially important for those attending the graduation to see the relatively small number going military (less than a dozen SA/ROTC/enlistment in a class of 340).

This year, DS2 will be recognized at senior awards night for NROTC MO scholarship - whether the local recruiter comes? or a school official reads the scholarship description we sent in. I expect the same kind of recognition during the graduation ceremony for all those choosing military. WA is a liberal state, but I’m glad our high school opted for inclusion during our graduation events.

The school my kids attend have a member of the branch of service present the scholarship and the principal or JROTC instructor will announce the value (in $$) of the scholarship. Always lots of gasps from the audience! Last night they had 4 Army, 1 AF, 1 USNA appointment and several enlistments with coinciding college tuition awards. God Bless America!

Reach out to the local AROTC program near your area. They will verify the award through cadet command and will either come out themselves or a local ROTC SORD recruiting unit may come out.
