YES - USNA Foundation/NMMI accepted! (AROTC too...for now)
Has your son confirmed his USNA Fonudation Acceptance, I was just curious how that all worked out for him.
DS
has accepted the USNA Foundation Scholarship and will be attending NMMI for his sponsored prep year (2012-2013).
In addition, DS, upon the advice and guidance of the ROO at THE OSU, has accepted the 3 yr. AD AROTC scholarship – even after the telephone conversation with him about the implications to others who may be on a waiting list (our concern) in light of the pending Foundation scholarship/sponsorship confirmation. Evidently in this case, it’s a win-win-win situation –
Win #1 - DS has a “safety net” – a school (The OSU) and an officer commissioning program (AROTC) are confirmed right up to the first day of class at The OSU (his non-attendance on that day will then make him ineligible for the award);
Win #2 - The school’s battalion (as of the May 10th acceptance/declination deadline) possesses the 3 yr National scholarship assigned to it as per DS’s school choice decision on the AROTC 3 yr. acceptance form;
Win #3 - A hardworking, competitive, promising non-scholarship OSU Freshman AROTC cadet (DS if he’s there and if he’s not, another young person) will be awarded that 3 yr scholarship by the battalion next spring!
Either we have encountered a most magnanimous individual (the ROO) or this is how the Army typically handles these situations! Either way, we are one family who is very impressed with the AROTC processes and procedures. It seems that being honest, even if it’s something one might think the Army doesn’t want to hear – like “commissioning as a Naval Officer is my goal,” the honest approach they appreciate – and speak candidly to! As a matter of fact, it was the same ROO who advised DS to accept the 3 year during the phone conversation over a week ago who'd written the letter DS received a couple days ago congratulating him on being offered the battalion-based freshman year tuition only AROTC scholarship!
I tell you what – DS’s journey, no—check that, the
journeys the 4 military kids in this family have taken over the years have been
full to the brim with adventures and surprises – some awesome surprises and some awful– but we’ve learned and grown and benefitted from ALL of it!
I thank my lucky stars, I thank God above, for my kids, for
all kids who are currently serving, for all who are in training to serve, for all who are about to set out on the military journey. And for all veterans, young and old, those still with us and those who have departed, a heartfelt THANK YOU. I hope everyone on this forum has a Happy and Safe Memorial Day weekend! You guys are the best!

And Proud Daughter of
Military parents:
My mother and father are both WWII enlisted Army veterans (they met while serving and married in ’45). They moved in with us in ’08 as Dad had later stage Alzheimer’s and Mom, bedridden for awhile, couldn’t live on their own anymore. He passed away in ’10, just days before DD was deployed. Mom , 91, still is with us and recalls her WAC days with clarity and quite a bit of fondness.
P.S. Life is a whirlwind – exciting and something new blowing through on a daily basis! Happy Memorial Day All!
