AROTC Major Dilemma

Heya guys, I've been lurking this forum and have another question I haven't seen pop up. I am just about ready to submit my application and schedule a PMS interview but I have two slight problem. My #1 school as of now is Virginia Tech and if I was offered a scholarship I would choose my major as computer science, however slight problem. I already am 99.9% sure after talking to Tech people, admissions people that I would be denied into the engineering program, therefore choosing Business Information Technology. The ROTC portal doesn't have BIT so what is a major that would fall along the same lines I could use so there aren't technicality problems with my major later on.

In addition to this, compared with other schools computer science curriculum I know I would be able to handle computer science at other schools. In other words, if my #1 is VT and is BIT, and my #2-5 are Computer Science majors I would be going into, should I choose Business Information Technology on my ROTC portal or Computer Science. I'm afraid if I get a scholarship when choosing Computer Science it may cause an issue if I pursue VT under BIT.

This is very far out but I want to branch MI, Cyber, and Artillery in that order. Would a BIT major even work at all or would computer science be an ABSOLUTE must? Thanks so much!

Hello, MythyLW. I had my PMS interview last Tuesday, and I had a similar question that I brought up during the interview.

I am applying to the University of Southern California and Vanderbilt, for instance. At USC, I plan to major in accounting, while I plan to major in Law, History, and Society at Vanderbilt.

I addressed this question to the PMS, who told me that selecting a major via the scholarship portal is in no way binding and that changing one's major is not a problem (during the process of accepting the scholarship and even as a college student) so long as you are able to graduate within the four year window for which the scholarship applies.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much! This really is a big relief because I didn't want it to screw me over in the future potentially.

Yeah, the short version is the Army doesn't care nearly as much as the Navy and Air Force about your major. Secondly, your major doesn't necessarily having any bearing on your career path in the Army.

Also unlike Navy and Air Force, unless you are already a computer and cyber geek, Army likes to hire CPTs who spent their LT years at other positions like MI or Signals to join their Cyber Force. So don’t focus on Commissioning directly to Cyber as 2LT. Get grounding in other areas like Infantry/MI or Signals before turning career into Cyber. First get into college get that scholarship. Study in any Major that interests you the most. But take some relevant STEM as well. Branch into one of the above areas. Graduate with honors and enjoy the Army first!

Actually cyber accession now focuses on the entry population of cadets to 2LTs. The voluntary transfer program was more a necessity to build a senior cohort and is no longer the means to go Cyber
