Ask away

Your first year, you can have family and friends visit for Parents Weekend in Oct, and can go home for Christmas and New Years after Fall semester final exams before returning very early in Jan for the Spring semester. Some years the academic and military training schedule are worked to allow a long weekend (maybe 5 days) over Thanksgiving for those who think its worth the expense. Other times you get like 4 days including travel so why bother. Next time you can go home is Spring Break. After that, you have to wait for your assigned 3-week summer leave period. Note that some cadets have extracurricular activities (athletics, competitive clubs) that might take up part of the Winter or Spring Break. If your parents and friends are free, they can come to YOU at USAFA, but you might not have very much time to see them--a few hours in the evening if you give up academic call to quarters (study time) or after training ends (if any) on a Saturday. Sundays are typically free until academic call to quarters that night. Finally, you can request a sponsor in the local area--typically a friend of USAFA who is willing to host a cadet in their house so they can get away from USAFA from time to time. If you really mesh well, then you will likely be invited to lots of family events and they will provide better support to you...like rides to the airport and hosting your parents during Parents Weekend visits. Upperclassmen get all of the above plus more "passes" to leave USAFA during the semester. A junior will be allowed to have a car, which opens up way more opportunities.

It is impossible for me to predict how miserable your experience will be. Different cadets will have different experiences (squadron environment, class schedule, assigned trainers/mentors, fast fourthclass friends), and every person is stressed by different things. USAFA is designed to be stressful, so plan accordingly so you learn, grow, and adapt quickly to reduce your stressors. For example, if you are more athlete than academic, then make it a priority to study as poor grades are the fastest way to be booted from USAFA. If you take things personally, then try to understand why you are being yelled at (trained) rather than assuming the trainer doesn't like you. It helps if you are the kind of person that can bounce back after taking a hit, and you are the kind of person that never ever gives up.
Just a couple of corrections to this post...
Parents Weekend is in September over Labor Day weekend (not in October)
Not all sponsor families provide rides to the airport or host parents during their visits

Thanks for the reply!

How often do you get to visit your family/friends out of stare? Also, is USAFA completely miserable freshman year? (before recognition)

This will vary wildly depending on Squadron and USAFA rules. I thought my 2027 DS would only be able to come home for Thanksgiving and Winter break, but he was able to come home two other times. A LOT of cadets went home for Columbus day three day weekend.

Thank you for starting this thread. With a biology major are you interested in medical school? If so can you share your thoughts on the path to medical school at the USAFA. If not, anything you can share about any of your fellow biology major colleagues that are on that path would be great.

Did your DS come home on some three day weekends as a fourthclass cadet or as an upperclassman? Was a simple "Weekend Pass"" used or was a special request/justification also needed (e.g., wedding, family reunion, family member hospitalization)?

He is C4C. One was a three day weekend. Another was a two day weekend. I do not know the type of pass that was requested. One was for a 3 day weekend. One was for the Air Force/Navy Football game in Annapolis. We live near Annapolis. I do not know what the types of passes are officially called.

Point is, that I literally thought that we would only see him Thanksgiving and Winter break, and maybe spring break if he came home then, but there has been a lot more freedom than we expected.

Does every cadet get the job they wanted? If not, why?
Not a cadet but have researched this. For the most part yes, if you work hard in school and rank sufficiently. It also depends on the air forces needs though. Plenty of people don’t get their first choice either because the AF is drawing back on pilot slots (assuming you want pilot) or you didn’t rank high enough to get your first option. Any cadets or other here are free to correct me if I am wrong, they definitely know more about it than I do but this is basically what I have determined from free research. Hopefully it helps!

Special passes are required to go that far. Overnight passes limit how far cadets can go away from the Academy. It is pretty easy to get "emergency leave" for special family events by submitting the proper paperwork. Being in good standing (not on any probations) always helps. Ds has had a lot of friends go home for long weekends on special leave, the event doesn't have to be that special to get approved in most cases...even as doolies. Obviously, it is harder to get approval on a Silver (training) Saturday, but not impossible (event needs to be more legitimate like a wedding or graduation). One of his friends went home for several weeks doolie year (missing classes) due to a death in the family. I felt USAFA handled that situation very well.

We haven't felt the need for our DS to come home on a 3 day weekend. It is expensive. He came home for Thanksgiving doolie year, but choose to go skiing this year. It was much cheaper than coming home! We'll see him at spring break and then he'll come home for his brother's high school graduation in May.

This is a great thread. I'm just curious: Did you do any flying before you arrived at USAFA freshman year? Do many cadets earn a Private Pilot's License before they arrive? Is there a benefit in doing so?

Finishing up my PPL in my senior year in HS. There are opportunities at the Academy for those who possess a PPL. You do not need a PPL in order to be considered for a pilot slot either, but may look good on your application.

Hello! I wonder about how many bags a new student usually needs to bring - meaning how much are they required to bring on the first day of their freshman year?

1 small bag. A packing list is sent. You'll be issued almost everything.
Bring as little as possible. You don't have a lot of storage space, you have to move all your stuff, and you will have plenty of opportunities to transfer stuff from home to USAFA once you are there for a while and better understand what you want/need. The longer you are there the more your room is allowed to be "personalized"

Each class has an appointee booklet with this information. You can see class of 2027’s on usafa’s website. My son took one backpack with the listed items (underwear, basic toiletries). Parents usually bring anything else that’s wanted (and allowed) on parents’ weekend.

My son thought so as well. He's been working on his PPL for 18 months, and is nearly finished. He's doing his final solo cross-country flights now, and getting prepared for his FAA checkride.
