Because your MIDN is probably like mine and will get all squirmy when you ask; "Hey, is the Navy kicking in COMRATS to your pay, now that you're not on the Yard eating in King Hall?"

Maybe make your MIDN squirm a little more by adding: "...because our grocery bill has gone up quite a bit since you've been home..."

with a little more salt: "Did you think you were just going to keep that $12.50 a day while you're living here for free?"

Look, a Dad has to have some fun during a pandemic.

Another funny thing on the subject of COMRATS—Midshipmen Personnel Office is notoriously terrible at getting them disbursed to the mids. Pretty much every mid never received some of COMRATS they’re owed, and a few have simply never received any at all. It became so scandalous that they responded earlier in the semester with a backlog that mids could sign up for where old COMRATS that were never disbursed would be manually put in.

Am I a jerk for charging my plebe $100.00 a month to help with groceries? I assure you that our grocery bill has gone up by much, much more.

No, JMPO. It’s a life lesson in stepping up to contribute to the family and taking on an adult perspective. It’s not a flying visit but full-time residence for an unplanned period of time by a salaried active duty military member. But that’s just me, every family has their own dynamic and approach.

We get his $12.50 a day. He eats more than that by noon. He volunteered it, to his credit when in the space of 6 days my wife was terminated from both her jobs and the senior leadership my our company took a 25% pay cut. We’ll be alright but a summer job for our mid is not a luxury if he is nosing up to the family trough.

My husband placed a tip jar on the sideboard when our cadets came home. It remains empty but our wood pile for next winter, OH LA LA! I see some bonfires on the horizon and a cozy home. We are doing our part for their fitness. 😂

My almost-youngster reminded me with a tinge of pride that 2023 plebes are the highest paid plebes in the history of USNA thanks to COMRATS.

You are not a jerk.

30 x $12.50/day = $375. They are getting a big friends and family discount.

And it’s kind of looking like 375x4 = $1,500 😳

My mid just informed me of his summer school classes USNA has him assigned to.... oh boy.

Good topic... what is the summer plan right now? How many classes is he taking? I know things are still in flux and changing. I am sure PS will be the next item we hear about as they get 2020 situated.

They were auto-placed in two classes. His assigned classes are ones 'everyone takes', not major-specific. Currently, they are trying to work out conflicts with professional trainings, and non-mandatory summer school. That's pretty much all that has been relayed. Also a 'be patient, bear with us' type statement. Their assigned classes are viewable, and if they have conflicts, they are to inquire. Basically kind of looks like it is the beginning of figuring out where and what all will be doing this summer. Zero block canceled, summer school 1st and 2nd blocks. Don't know about 3rd block.

Getting ahead would be a great thing academically. Focus on 2 classes only. Summer school was 1 class, 4 weeks long. It moved at such a fast pace, but it was good to knock out a tough course and focus on that one only. It’s going to be interesting to see how USNA adjusts over the next academic year to training and ensuring Mids get exposure to the fleet and various opportunities. With lots of schedule adjustments and other things I think they can get creative.

My mid asked my advice as to whether he should take an easy class, or a harder one. I have no idea! None of my kids have ever had summer school. They are able to request a different class than what was assigned.

Agree it’s going to be very interesting how this plays out. Hard to imagine him gone again actually it’s been that long! Will it really be considered 4 years by the bay 🤷‍♀️??

They may have to learn to march all over again 😆

Just my opinion. Hard class. It goes fast but allows them to focus on a tougher course with only one other class. Knock it out with 6-8 credits and no military obligations than when they have 18-22 with a million obligations. Balance it with an easier course. Just my two cents and what I would do.

My mid was assigned physics. Sounds like they are meeting 2x per day during first block to take out physics 1. He told me (and I can’t vouch for the veracity of this) that they are going to try to get youngsters thru 2 classes this summer so they can free up time later for training OR so that they will have fewer on-line classes in the fall if they can’t come back. Either way, it sounds like a good plan at this point.

He told me he didn’t have a choice on what classes to take.

My mid was assigned Calc 3 and Statics . He's really hoping to change to Physics and History. Learning Calc 3 and statics from 3000 miles away was not what he envisioned when he began this journey 😜

How about two hard classes?
