Posted this in the USMA forums, but was told I should post it DoDMERBs forum:

I am a candidate for USMA Class of 2026. I am basically finished with my application, just need to take the CFA, which I'm scheduled to take soon. However, I was disqualified for being diagnosed with asthma after the age of 13, but I did not use any inhalers since, never had an attack, and recently got a letter from my doctor basically saying I don't have asthma anymore. I was already requested for a waiver about a month ago probably because I am a recruited athlete. I've also already received my LOA, SAT score's decent (1290), GPA 5.4 on a 5.0 scale, and ranked 5 out of 162 kids in my class. I am also a female if that helps anything. I've been playing my sport competitively for a long time, and only went to an asthma doctor because I hadn't been performing that well at the time and my parents thought asthma must've been the problem. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has an idea on the likelihood of me getting a waiver. My coach said he feels good about it, but I am very worried because I really really want to attend USMA. It's also been a month since my waiver's been requested. (I know it's a long process, but I'm super nervous about it!) Thank you to all!

I'd like to know the answer to this question as well. I was diagnosed with "mild intermittent asthma" when I was 11, but only had to use an inhaler when I got sick, which was maybe 3 times. The doctor at my medical exam didn't ask anything about this, but I did indicate asthma in my packet even though I don't have a continued history. I haven't heard about a waiver. Also a recruited athlete but to USNA.

@usma2026 My son was in your same position 3 years ago hoping for an asthma waiver. He had his heart set on West Point after attending SLE.
Unfortunately, his waiver was denied but he did receive a waiver for a
4 year AROTC scholarship.
This past summer he had the honor to represent his university at West Point during Air Assault training. He lived and trained with West Point cadets for two weeks. After spending time at West Point he realized that he was much happier as an AROTC cadet and everything happens for a reason.

Was he also a recruited athlete? Does that have any weight in getting a waiver?

usma2026 - I answered your email:wiggle:

No, he wasn't a recruited athlete. He was a very good student however.
He was also denied by the AFA but was issued a waiver and subsequent appointment by USNA.

Every situation/waiver is different.
But that's not what I am trying to convey to you. Even if you don't get the waiver you could ultimately be happier attending another academy or ROTC program. It took my son two years to realize not getting the waiver was a blessing in disguise. He loves being an ROTC cadet at his university.
