I am hoping to go to USNA one day and after that become an Astronaut. Is USNA a good place to get the education I need to be an Astronaut?

Yes, USNA is a good place to get an education but so is Purdue University. Two former Naval Aviators went there and then later went to the moon - -Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan. There are other universities that produce astronauts.

After my son was inducted into USNA, he noticed his favorite place to get chicken wings in our town had a signed picture of an astronaut on the wall - he ate there.

Charles Frank Bolden Jr. (born August 19, 1946)[ is a former NASA administrator, a retired United States Marine Corps Major General, and a former astronaut who flew on four Space Shuttle missions.

Graduate of USNA.

My son’s dream has always been to be an astronaut. Almost impossible for him because he is colorblind.

Major General Charles Bolden USNA 68 had a distinguished career prior to becoming an astronaut. He flew the Intruder in Vietnam and later held significant commands such as a MEF and a MAW. A daughter is a physician. Bolden was the graduation speaker one year at one of my former schools. The man looks really sharp in a suit. He lived a block from the school in a walled community.

There have been fifty-four Astronauts educated at USNA. Considering that there have been only 560 Astronauts on the entire planet, I think that makes USNA a pretty good place to study.

The current active NASA Astronaut Corps is listed here.

Chris Cassidy, NAPS ‘89, USNA ‘93, and MIT, is a former Navy Seal .... Right now, he is the Mission Commander on the International Space Station (ISS).

There are many , many USNA grads who are, or have been Astronauts... As someone noted, I think we have the most of any college. I recall going to the IMAX Space Station show several years ago, and I recognized 4-5 of the astronauts from my time in the Navy - one was in my Aviation Indoctrination class, and another was one of my Navigation instructors out at Mather AFB.

Attending USNA isn't going to make you an Astronaut - but it certainly is a good starting point and provides opportunities. The key is what you do with each of those opportunities. Good luck !

Thanks, this has been really helpful! I'm thinking of maybe majoring in Aerospace engineering!
FYI: There is at least one former astronaut who is a prof in the Aero Dept. A former teammate and friend of mine who is also
an astronaut was teaching Aero but she has moved on.
