Athlete nominations

My DS went through the nomination process same as others.
Coach said If we could not get it he would help to get it but my DS got it from our congressman. We applied to congressman, two senators, and VP. Good luck!

I'm not sure of the OPs wording...

What a "blue chip" identified athlete/candidate means to me as an ALO is this: IF this candidate is 3Q, they will be going to USAFA, either direct entry or to the prep school. "Blue Chip" is requested by the coach and granted by USAFA/RR. It can also be "removed" and I've seen that happen too.

Does a "blue chip" athlete move to the "head/top of the list?" In a manner of speaking, I suppose they do. I have never in my career seen a BC athlete/candidate that was 3Q "not" either gotten to the prep school or direct entry. It's the "Wonka Bar" golden ticket in a way. But...realize...BC is not unlimited...one coach I spoke with called it his "golden BB." He had VERY few he could use and he guarded them closely.

Some 3Q BC's don't get a slot.

Believe me I agree with you. I may understand it better than some but it’s still confusing And a very stressful process . And a lot does come down to trusting the coach

Maybe the biggest thing that comes out of this discussion is to make sure the player and parent understand exactly what is being offered. Especially if they are being recruited by or considering other schools. And if in doubt call the coaching office and ask.

Maybe the player has such outstanding gpa and test scores etc the coach may not feel a need to use one of their limited blue chip slots. But if the coach is going to use one of those few slots on a kid they usually make that crystal clear.
My DS still has not received her appointment yet. However, her coach's exact words to her "Don't worry you're definitely in" She all already had her nomination should we trust that she gets her appointment?

If she is cleared medically and is a blue chip athlete, then you should feel very confident about her receiving an appointment.

Her DOD record says qualified. She did have to do a BCA because of her weight her body fat came in at 18% she was cleared on Feb 9th. the weighting game in hard that is for sure

I had a 3Q blue chip last year who was not appointed.

Having said that, he did pop up in my portal in late December. It was too late to get a Congressional nom and other discretionary noms were not available or given to other athletes. So, it does happen.

Our DD is a incoming blue-chip. She was 3Q'd in early December & received her MOC nomination in early Jan -- 2 days later appointment in the portal. Her coach was very clear that as long as she was 3Q'd they would find a way (she had verbally/social media committed previous spring). Coach pretty much confirmed she was in as soon as the nomination came through. A couple of other local recruited athletes also received a January nomination. As previously stated, being blue-chipped seems to move you to the front of the line.

And now I've seen it happen.

Never doubted it "could" but figured it was as rare as hens teeth.

Then again, four years ago a candidate of mine received a VP nomination (first I'd ever seen or even really heard of) and then an offer of appointment so...

Does anyone know if coaches of all varsity sports have "blue chip" designations that they can use? Or only some sports?

I don’t know the official answer to your question but all sports have a roster to fill so I would assume they all have leverage for their most sot after persons. That being said, once there you still need to live up to the standards and expectations of the rest of the cadets so you’ll want to make sure you are a strong candidate going in on all fronts to survive.

Blue Chip is a term that gets used for recruited athletes at the D1 level. USAFA has to compete with other D1 schools who often have scholarship $$ at their disposal, especially for sports like football & basketball. To field competitive teams USAFA has to be able to recruit legitimate D1 level athletes. Some (all?) coaches have a # of slots that they can allot to recruit athletes, so the term Blue Chip is used by coaches to help recruit. It doesn't guarantee entry, and (most) candidates have to 3Q (or some go through Prep school first), but in the case of my DD it certainly seemed to move her to the front of the admissions line.

What does 3Q mean?

My DS has been recruited to play a sport at the USAFA, he was told by the coach that he had to get into the school on his own, if he does, then he has a spot on the team. I was a D1 athlete and had no business getting into the school that I attended, but the coach pulled strings to get me in. That doesn't happen at USAFA from what I've been told.

Fully qualified in 3 areas:
Medical/DoDMERB
Physical/CFA
Scholastic/academic - everything else the SA wants to evaluate.

A nomination is an administrative requirement (not for USCGA).

Reading every page, menu item and link on the SA websites can help fill in the blanks.
