What are some good scholarships cadets can apply for? I'd like to start looking into those to avoid 529 plan if possible. Can grants from fafsa be used?

There is no tuition or other financial cost to attend a service academy, and cadets receive a monthly stipend while there. Cadets are issued all of their uniforms, computer, etc., and the cost of those items is paid back through monthly deductions from their stipend until it is paid off. You can use scholarships that do not specify that they must be used for tuition or room and board to pay down that cost. When you fill out your FAFSA you will notice that CGA (or any of the service academies) are not on the list of schools, so there are no Fafsa grants for a service academy.
