HI, My son joined both WP (SLE) and USAFA summer program this summer, he really like it, has developed huge enthusiasm to apply for Service academy .

I am little worry about background check which may impact his admission ... I heard all Service Academy will check 3 generations back of family.

I and my wife came to US 25 years ago from China, attended graduate school, and after that we have been working in California since then. All of our employers are US big tech companies. We all have been naturalized to be US citizenship since 2006 . Our parents are still in China, retired. they were all engineers or teachers, nothing to do with any Gov related job.

(My son was born and raised in California )

Given the current political tension between countries, Would those background potentially impact his admission for Service academy ?

IMO

Not in a negative way. If he is fluent in language it might help.

I have been around SA students for decades, I am on my 2nd SA student in the family, this is the first time I have ever heard anyone suggest a background check on parents or grandparents as far as SA admission.

This will not impact admissions. The only way that it may have an impact would be if he needed some special Top Secret Clearance once he is commissioned.

Don't worry about this. He should worry about putting his best packet together in order to be competitive for admissions.
A lot of first and second generation kids from all over the world become cadets and Army officers.

I dont think how many generations were born in the US makes a difference. What does make a difference is your connections to relatives and friends in China or whatever country you are talking about. My son had to deal with the same issue except it was with Israel. My wife who is Israeli born but has US citizenship and my younger son who is US born with dual citizenship were considered non-US when my older son went through security clearance.. On the other hand, i am US citizen born in South America and they didn't give a crap about me. This was through Rotc and not the academy.

My DS graduated in 2023. He had a friend At USMA with the exact same situation, Chinese family - born and raised in California. His grandparents were also still in China. He (obviously) had no issues.

I'm also Asian (not Chinese) from California and my cadet was born and raised in California. My cadet is class of 2026.

For background check related to security clearance, I believe the form asked for three references who knows your cadet-candidate and your family really well. I recommend finding friends who know your family in California for a long time and can speak fluent English, willing to answer the call and answer questions. The background check people really do call the references and ask a lot of questions. They called our next door neighbor of 23 years.

Hi, my son had accepted the appointed. How is your son? Hope they can meet each other. We are the same background as yours. I don’t know how to personal message you through this forum. But if your son will accept the appointment. If you don’t mind, we can contact each other.
