Unfortunately, even those applicants that are deemed "qualified" will not all receive an appointment offer. Backup plans are essential! A reasonable plan may be to reapply the following year or pursue ROTC.

A significant number of appointees have completed one or more years of college before being successful in obtaining an appointment.

If you choose ROTC, be sure to select a school with high academic standards. For those trying to reapply to USAFA, I suspect the admissions office will not be as impressed with good grades from a college known for lower academic standards. Graduating from a college with relatively low academic standards may fill the square, but the academic preparation for life may be problematic. For example, when I went to UPT, the academic washout rate USAF-wide was about 1-2%. In my class the academic washout rate for graduates from one specific college/ROTC program was 100%. My personal observation was that these officers lacked the academic preparation to be successful in UPT. If not successful in earning an academy appointment, seek a university with high academic standards for your backup plan.

Good advice! My DS had AFROTC as backup plan and the backup plan came first! ;) He received Type 1 last Oct 30. He is still waiting for his nom and appt for all SAs.
