Beast 1 SL-AMA

For the OP good advice given so far.
What is the #1 thing you saw during Beast that nobody should ever do?
I'm far removed from Beast but it happens every year. It's not supposed to be easy. Don't quit.

Good socks and underwear are highly recommend. Issued dress socks and underwear are not good. Below are what DS took to beast last year and had no issues with blisters or chafing.

Dress socks for low quarters-black cushion type sock rather than thin dress sock.
Hanes Men's ComfortBlend Max Cushion Crew Socks 6-Pack, Black Shoe Size: 6-12 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FRBTPHK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_-T9tEbT7PD1B8

Boot socks
Fox River Men's Wick Dry Maximum Mid Calf Military Sock, 3 Pack (Black, Large) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XP75BYN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_W79tEb2CBT2XE

Underwear-No logo dri-fit type (nocotton) boxer brief with 6” inseam to not show past PT shorts. Very hard to find without some type of logo on the waistband. DS found some all black ones at Target with barely visibly logo and he said they were fine. As last resort, logos can be blacked out with laundry proof marker.

I read the boot socks had to be coyote color, not black, is that incorrect? The 2024 list with low quater Bates and boots etc., state coyote fox river????

Last year, New Cadets could wear either black, green, or coyote socks during Beast. Suggest you follow your boot and/or packing memo. Bear in mind there can be minor inconsistencies between these memos. Don’t stress over them. Fox River socks are excellent both during and after Beast. Pretty sure my daughter picked up some white athletic socks at Walmart too. For rucking, the Fox River Socks and well broken in boots are a must. Sock liners are a good idea as well. And, most importantly, do some rucking (a few miles) with up to 40 pounds as you break the boots in.

Do you know anyone who entered the academy with multiple years of college complete? I'll have an Associates in Engineering in May, and I have taken all of the math and science for engineering already. I know that I won't be able to test out of all of it, but generally did they have a lot of leeway in their schedule to double major/minor, etc? Thanks in advance.

Yes. Many.

Hi! I recently received my appointment to USMA and am trying to get ahead of the game on ordering shoes as well. I ordered the Garmont T8 Bifida Tactical Military Boot in a size 6.5 regular from Amazon (since I'm a girl and usually wear a women's 8) and they fit. From reading the above thread, are "low quarters" just black dress shoes? I'm not very familiar with the terminology. Do women order the same low quarters as men? And by any chance could someone provide a link or the product name of the specific low quarters they bought?
Thanks for your help!

Yes as to the black dress shoe question and the most common brand I have seen on SAF threads is Durashock. Recommend reading the Boot letter from USMA. It will give you authorized models of the above.

Durashock is a Bates shoe. Durashock is the model/line.

The authorized low quarters are Bates brand. Model 00968 for men and 00769 for women. There was a good bit of confusion with low quarters last year as authorized Bates models were out of stock or production. The boot letter changed three times last year to reflect available models. The women’s model 00769 is currently not available on the Bates website but is available through other online retailers and apparently through USMA cadet store. Durashocks and Lites are other Bates models with essentially the same upper but different technology to make them lighter or more shock absorbing. As long as the upper looks identical to authorized model, no one is going to check model numbers inside your shoes.

Why dri-fit vs cotton? Are black the color that was required? Boxer vs reg brief is by choice correct?

Dri fit because it will be hot and humid. Cotton retains moisture and doesn’t dry quickly. Wet underwear = chafing. Briefs are fine but tend to rub more than longer compression dri fit. Black so you don’t stand out.

Do you recommend memorizing some cadet knowledge before the summer?
‘23 here, big no. Besides the Cadet Creed and maybe the Soldiers Creed, that’s a GREAT way to get picked out for being a super try hard. Knowledge kinda sucks, but is part of the beast experience. Even if you know it all early, it’s not like you’re going to be given a break. I remember standing for almost an hour and a half at one point reading knowledge, and would purposely get myself dropped for something to do. You’ll have plenty of time to memorize ALL that stuff.

21' here. DON'T pre-memorize anything. Spend that time enjoying your summer. You will not lack memorization time. If you fail to memorize something nothing much happens to you(yes, you may have to spend time others get "off" memorizing).
