Hello all,

Last Sunday, January 5th, I was fortunate to receive appointment to the Naval Academy and accepted the appointment soon after. In the email they sent to let me know of my appointment they mentioned a package would be sent to me with my Permit to Report, when browsing the forums I heard of something called a BFE.

The two questions I have are: What is the BFE, and when will the Permit to Report be sent to me so I can complete it.

Thank you

Congratulations on your appointment. That is very exciting.

BFE = big fat envelope and is just your fancy portfolio USNA sends with your official letter of appointment.

The Permit to Report is online. Here is a link to last year's...

Congratulations again!

Thank you very much.

I was looking at my portal and saw that I have some documents to fill out, should I wait to fill them out until I get the Permit to Report or fill them out as soon as possible?

Once again Thank you for the speedy reply and the congratulations.

Nevermind this was last years. Disregard this.

Since you've accepted your appointment, go ahead and get the ones they have provided already started. The c/o '29 PTR will come in May, and have a list of other things you will need to get done.

BFE will show up anywhere from now until sometime after Plebe summer. :P

The Big Fat Envelope is proof in hand of your appointment to the Naval Academy. Your family will be happy to see it. Quite nice.

The Permit To Report (PTR) is not yet out for Class of 2029. It will be updated in the spring, usually in May, gradually or in chunks. Class of 2028 info is still up at the link below; browse through their PTR and checklists, other links. Much does not change. Keep an eye on that page when it get close to May.

If you have action documents in your portal, best get started. Lots more to come.

Big Fat Envelope (BFE) harkens back to the days before everything was digital. Colleges and SA's would send a big fat envelope to selected candidates with all of the information needed to start the registration process. Thin White Envelopes (TWE) was not what you wanted to see because it would just be a "Sorry you were not selected" piece of paper.

SAF members still use the terms BFE and TWE even though everything is really digital now. Though you will get something eventually.

I believe my son’s class of 2022 (so received in 2018) was the last to receive a true BFE. For sure, my 2024 (so in 2020) was online.

BFE, here, also gets used interchangeably as the blue padded appointment folder.

Everyone offered an appointment receives the blue padded appointment offer. No one receives a Manila envelope full of items to fill out and return via snail mail. Including the PTR letter.

Maybe a recent Mid (plebe) can let us know what actually comes via mail these days? Anything?

Congrats! One thing you could do is look over last years Permit to Report required vaccine list. The required vaccines rarely change year to year and you could start getting any of the ones you do not have. Some have to spaced at least a month apart… so you could get a head start on those and save the paperwork for each shot. If you choose to not get any of the missing ones they will give you ALL of them in I-day. This could cause you to feel pretty crummy the first week of plebe summer.
