Hello, I am considering majoring in business at USAFA as well as becoming a pilot. While I understand that the majority of people who pass the flight exam go on to become pilots, I wasn't sure if majoring in business would hinder my abilities to pass that test? Does anyone have any feedback on the test, majoring in business at USAFA, or the capabilities to pass the test?

Somewhere on the USAFA website, there’s a page with majors that they offer and the respective jobs that can come from that, I’ll try to find it for you

Here the link, I don’t see business as a listed major, but I’m sure there’s a major related to Business

Click on one of the majors, scroll down a bit, and you can see the different jobs you can go into

Business major is essential the "Management" major. Which under that is accounting, finance and marketing tucked into the mgt classes.

Dont know about USAFA, but from AF Rotc, you can get a pilot spot with any majors. When things get more competitive as in less spots, they tend to look at STEM majors. However, from what I read, when you go up to be picked, your major isnt in your paperwork. However, you major does come into play when they have Field Training in the summer between sophomore and Junior year. When they have to limit the people to who can go to Field training, STEM majors seem to have the edge, Prior to 2019, it really made no difference as everyone went. From what i hear about USAFA and this is about 1-2 years old, is that anyone who wants to get a pilot spot and is medically qualifed, will get a spot. There have been some years when not all of the spots were filled. What the story is at this moment, i cant tell you. I hear UPT is backed up about one year so it looks like they finally clogged the training pipeline

Any major at USAFA can be a pilot. There is no “flight exam” that you take at USAFA to qualify for pilot. There are flight programs at the Academy that you can participate in (Soaring/Gliders and Powered Flight) that will enhance your aviation knowledge and abilities, but they are not required. If you are physically qualified you can get a pilot slot and head to Undergraduate Pilot Training after graduation. At UPT is where you will take exams of your flight knowledge during the academic phase of training. All of this will be taught during your classes at UPT.

My son was a Behavioral Science major at USAFA and he did fine in UPT.

I guess this is more related to UPT, but how would one get to go to Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) if they were to get a pilot slot?

For AFROTC, first, you tell them you want to go to ENJJPT. Then they select based on your scores, GPA, PCSM, Commanders Ranking and so on. They usually have stats on the people who got in and what they scored. Usually, its very high scores. My son didnt get it but had a 98 PCSM score which is high but his GPA was average and he has no idea what the rest of his scores were. How USAFA, works I dont know because i have no idea besides GPA what other scores a USAFA cadet would have.

Do you know where I could find these stats?

This is post from 2016. Hopefullly it will give you an idea. Its from a website called www.flysquadron.com. Most of the people there AF pilots or those wanting to be a AF pilot

Hey guys,

Below you will find more details about the upcoming rated board as well as some ENJJPT stats.

1. The WINGS Categorization panel will open on 9 Jan 17 to nominate applicants for rated duty.
2. The deadline to nominate applicants for rated categorization is 20 Jan 17.
3. From 23 Jan to 3 Feb 16, AFROTC/RRFP will conduct a review of all information submitted.
4. The board will convene on 6 Feb 17.
5. Categorization board results are projected for release via WINGS on or about 17 Feb 17.

ENJJPT stats:

Due to the large variance in Det sizes, the most meaningful way to compare the RSS is relative to a class size of 20.

ENJJPT Avg PCSM 83.8

ENJJPT Avg AFOQT-P 92.2

ENJJPT Avg CGPA 3.59

ENJJPT Avg PFA 98.46

ENJJPT Avg CC rank 2.8 of 20

ENJJPT Avg FTU rank 4.4 of 20

Average stats for ENJJPT selects in 2015 are GPA 3.509, PCSM 83.2, PFA 98.58, FT rank 3.65/20, Commander Rank 3.48/20. Numbers vary slightly depending on the year, but not by much

Current Cadet (2022) here,

ENJJPT is a board process that's largely separate from the general "job drop" process. The top 250 pilot-qualified cadets in the general order of merit (GOM) are eligible to go in front of the board. Squadron AOCs will recommend cadets for ENJJPT, if they have any in that top 250 in their squad. Then they go before the board. The board scores cadets 50% from their GOM, and 50% from a subjective score that includes the bullets the cadet has submitted, their AOC's recommendation, and their PCSM score, plus a bonus that the Flying Training Squadron (Soaring, powered flight, etc) can give.

My class isn't to that point yet, but starting with '22, USAFA plans to start assigning slots earlier, so this would probably happen late your 2 dig year.

Summing it up:
  1. Be Pilot Qualified.
  2. Have a high GOM. That means top grades and top military score, and top physical scores (Although physical is much less important, only 10% of OPA)
  3. Demonstrate leadership and have good bullets.
  4. Try for a good PCSM. PCSM is a lot less important for USAFA than for ROTC. It's still important, but much less emphasized. I have heard that for '19's ENJJPT board, they didn't even look at PSCM, but still take that with a grain of salt.

Management is the closest thing that USAFA has to business, although we do have Econ as a major as well. Management is the largest major right now, from what I've heard. A word of warning though, the Academy is working to promote STEM. Currently, we've been told that when it comes to job drops (for pilot slots and such), there will be a bonus of some kind given to cadets in STEM majors. Its definitely still very possible for non-STEM cadets to get their desired job drops.
