Hi Everyone,

My DS said a number of his peers that are either sponsored preps (athletes) or self-preps in his SAP program are taking C4 Pre-Workout supplement before workouts, etc. There's a lot of information out there - much of it looks negative (banned, health impact, etc.). Wondering if any of you have any insights about:
  • Military's position on this (or a like) substance - performance enhancing?
  • Health risks, etc. of this supplement?

Navy references, to start:

Once at a SA, the coaching staff and training professionals advise on what, if anything, is allowed and appropriate. Banned drugs are noted in this link for Navy:

And more specifically, on drugs and supplements, Section IV, p.17:

As far as banned, it's sold in stores, and it's one of the better preworkouts. Hubby uses it for 60 days, takes break for 30, and so on.
Of course not sure about SA, but I can think of worse things kids are doing for an edge.
This just gives you energy and makes you sweat more.

The military testing isn't nearly as thorough as NCAA testing. I have done both. The military side is more for illegal drugs where NCAA includes tons of markers for steroids. Many of the over the counter supplements are banned by NCAA teams and only allowed to take what is provided to us. This is common across all college athletic levels, especially D1. The industry is just not regulated to the level one would think. My recommendation is to stay away from them. Unless they are athletes training to a certain level, supplements just aren't needed. These guys are at prep school doing lifting, PT and runs. This isn't like they are prepping for the Olympics and training that occurs multiple times a day and are used mostly for recovery.
