Hey everyone.

My schedule for senior year was just released and I am enrolled in AP Stats even though I had requested AP Calculus. Is it imperative that I have Calculus on my transcript? Or is AP Stats fine if my counselor is unable to rearrange my schedule? (p.s. I have taken honors pre-calc though I know it is nothing compared to ap calc)

No. You will just take it as a Plebe. Lots of kids come in here without having taken calculus. There is potential that they may let you validate Statistics (mandatory course) if you score well on the AP test.

I will preface this with the statememt "I am not on the admissions team of any SA, nor do I have insight into what they are looking for in a candidate". That being said, you seem to be a rising senior in HS, and as such should have begun your applications for wherever you desire to attend college. The proper way to address this question (short someone on here being a member of an admissions team) is to email your contact at admissions to the program(s) your are looking at and ask this question. An anonomous forum is not the place to address serious questions like your, go to the source and get the current policy.

As a side thought, if told you need Calc to be competitive, why can't you take eSchool Calc, or whatever it is called in your area to get the Calc requirement fulfilled? I think just about every state has some sort of homeschool or online course available to fulfill needed or wanted requirements.

Good Luck!

You will be a much more competitive candidate if you take calculus. SAs like those who take the hardest classes their school has to offer — especially in the core subjects of math, English, science and history. Statistics is not math. If your school offers calculus, that’s what you should be taking. What’s more, if you win offer of appointment, you’ll be glad you took calculus in high school. SA calculus — the standard plebe level — is very challenging.

My opinion: Calculus would be better. Calculus and Physics (which is calculus based) are Plebe killers. The better prepared you are for these courses, the less likely you are to struggle.

However, it's not a deal breaker to not take HS Calculus as long as you are thoroughly proficient at Pre-calculus and have good math test scores.
