Hello,
Are there a lot of mids from California? Perhaps Los Angeles (my city or residence)? If so, would they say that California and the Los Angeles area is very competitive or average?

Yes, there are a lot of mids from CA. We have 55 Members of Congress. Some mids may have Presidential nominations or JROTC nominations. The Senate nominations tend to be competitive due to the large number of applicants. Districts near a military installation may be more competitive. All of that is out of your control though. Just be the strongest applicant that you can be and apply to all sources of a nomination that you can. I read somewhere once that the state most represented at USNA was California. Good news for you - Californians do get in.

I wonder how they're going to react when they see an application from LAUSD.
 
Currently the Annapolis Parents Club of Southern California (does not include San Diego) has approximately 135 member families. Looking through the directory, I'd say that about a third of these Mids come from LAUSD. That is members alone, many parents choose not to join. You're in good company.
