So i keep hearing about how if you attend the SLS program, your application portal opens. Does this mean that candidates who are accepted into SLS have an advantage over those who didnt? Can someone explain what the significance of this is?

The only advantage I've heard of is, well, having your portal/file already open. When you apply for SLS, it automatically opens a file for USMA. Another advantage might be the wealth of knowledge you receive during the program, however, admissions does not give extra points to those who go to SLS.

Your portal only "opens" in the sense that you have a USMA candidate ID number and password set up. This doesn't really provide an advantage because you still can't access things like the essays until the application officially opens (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, I believe this is true as long as you apply for SLS, not necessary to actually attend.

It does however put you in an earlier slot for DODMERB

Advantage

SLS does not "officially" give you a better chance but I think it is a positive factor in that the Academy has alredy chosen you in a sense.

I believe 50% of SLS attendees end up as USMA cadets - take away those that give up, it is not a guarantee, but can give you an image that you are not that bad of a candidate at all (read the letter you received saying that you have been offered a slot on the SLS).
