To sum up some of the basics:
- Don’t procrastinate. The closer you plan to do it before your submission deadline, the more likely you are to tempt fate with injury, illness, bad weather, family emergency, or sudden non-availability of the venue or your administrator.
- Ideally, as soon as you finish your junior year spring sport, focus on prep and knock it out with a strong score before school starts in the fall. You’ll be busy with school, sports, multiple nom applications, alternate college plan applications, etc.
- Follow the techniques and timing exactly as you practice. Do individual practices but also periodic full practice CFAs exactly as they will be administered. The test is designed to successively exhaust muscle groups as it tests for overall fitness and stamina. Your solo run practice will likely be a better time than your practice CFA run.
- Research Stew Smith’s website and YouTube channel. He is a USNA grad, former Navy SEAL and USNA staff officer, now a fitness pro. Research YouTube, especially USMA.
- If you plan to apply to USMA, follow the video instructions exactly. Write it all out for your video assistant. You won’t have time during the CFA to stop and coach them. Walk through getting the right angles. USMA will ask for do-overs if they can’t see feet in certain elements, or see the arm bend angle in push-ups, etc.
