Chance him

This brings up a very good topic of conversation. “If” your applicant is not selected in the spring what will you do? This question should be a heavy discussion with your DS. Out of every class, approx. a third, are direct appointments from high school. As something to consider, take a look at private prep school. One year of maturing, and being better prepared will make a huge difference. In my opinion, direct appointed cadets, struggle on many levels that a mature cadet has already dealt with. On SAF is a whole section helping with understanding prep schools. I don’t know if you would be interested or have considered this.

Absolutely, we have had this discussion and in fact know two candidates who went to prep school (Valley Forge) and were appointed for this year. We're definitely preparing for the potential of private prep school. I'm reading though that it can also make sense to just go to a private college since those credits will transfer if you do not gain an appointment. We go for a day visit tomorrow at WP and will talk to admissions then so I'll get a better feel hopefully for where we are and what the options are. Thank you.

Just an update. Son re-took CFA, did much better:

Met with admissions on a day visit yesterday and they said he has a great chance of getting an appointment. Very optimistic today.

Personally, I favor attending a college over a private prep. I think you meant to say the prep school credits might not transfer to a college.

Do you remember the person that told you or your DS that he has a great chance of appointment was your DS' Regional Commander or not. The person was your DS' Regional Commander, he or she knows what kind of competition your DS has. If not, the person was just talking based on average numbers.

Where did you go to view your scores like that? I did my CFA but I don't see my scores anywhere on my file(it does say that they have received it though).

DS took CFA via a gym teacher at school. The first CFA he took was at SLE and they told him his scores there, this one was about 5 months later. His gym teacher told him his counts/times, I don't think there is any reason they shouldn't. Regarding who told him he was very competitive and looked good for an appointment it was an admissions officer at west point (we were on site for a day visit and they offer a meeting with admissions to go over your file and tell you your strengths/weaknesses and what you should work on). He was very familiar with the area we come from and while he could not tell us definitively he talked about the likelihood of a nomination (on a slate of nominations) vs a principle nomination and how many get pulled from the national waiting list. It was very informative.
