Chance of waiver for concussions

My answer above is for that specific case. Your question "may" be talking about another specific case, without giving me all the details about the new specific case......

Your question indicates a Waiver Granted. Could there later be a DQ? Yes. Lots of times. Waiver granted for condition X....then a broken femur would warrant a DQ. :wiggle:

Waiver denied = Means the process is over.
Waiver denied in this case means, "His medical history is not conducive with SAFE and SUCCESSFUL training, commissioning, and world-wide deployment in the military."
Waiver granted = Means the process is over.
Waiver granted in this case means the risk analysis of the waiver authorities determined that he could SAFELY and SUCCESSFULLY trainined, commissioned, and world-wide deployable in the military."

Different from other cases, this decision when made, will be final. :wiggle:
Sir, What do you mean by different from other cases? Thank you

The events, are objective and documented. Now it's a matter of the Navy's medical risk assessment and the USMC decision.
Many other cases are more subjective

My son just received a NROTC Marine option full scholarship and we are over the moon. However, today he DQ'd on his USAFA and USNA status because of concussions. He has had 4, one with 2 months recovery time. I submitted a physician's letter to DoDMERB for the consideration of a waiver - it states that he has had no recurring or lingering symptoms and that there is nothing that should prevent him from participating in ROTC. NROTC hasn't DQ'd yet, but I am assuming that they will. Any advice on how to be proactive and work harder on getting a waiver? Should I try to find a military-trained doctor to examine him? Does the area recruiting captain have any power? I am just devastated to have him receive this honor only to have it taken away.
Of course I'm searching for any bit of hope out there. But please be honest if you think it is hopeless. My friend in the Air Force says that there is a waiver for everything if you just pursue it enough.
Hello, my son is getting reviewed for a waiver currently. Did your son end up receiving one. My son had one concussion age 12 medically cleared after 6 weeks. No symptoms since. I am trying my best to stay hopeful!! He has a conditional appointment to USCGA

Are they actually requiring a waiver or asking for the head injury questionnaire to be completed. DS had one concussion as either a freshman or sophomore. They had him fill out a head injury questionnaire and he was cleared, no waiver needed. This was 2017, so process may have changed.

I’m not sure yet. His DODMRB resulted in a single disqualification from the concussion that interfered with normal activities or lasted longer than a month. (His was cleared in about 5 weeks and has had no symptoms since then)
USCGA and USNA both initiated a waiver...so now we wait and pray...
I’m hoping it will be cleared 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Ah, I did not read your initial post carefully enough. I missed the 5-6 weeks until being medically cleared. My DS was cleared in less than a month. If your DS has received a disqualification, it will require a waiver. If you end up needing additional help, I'd recommend you have DS look at the DODMERB forum and follow the instructions on there to contact @MullenLE, the definitive authority on DODMERB. I know this is an anxious time, but try to be patient and let the process play out. Best of luck.

Yes thank you! Patience is not a strength of mine lol! And makes me scared that people are still waiting on waivers from December...and we need it before May 15th or his appointment is rescinded 😔

Asking a slightly on topic question, if that's okay!
In the case of a Waiver Granted status, would that be the last correspondence on the DoDMERB portal, or would a document show up in the correspondence tab of the portal, similar to that of an AMI or DoDMERB notice of not meeting DoD standards?
What is the answer to this question?

I’m not exactly sure what is being asked, but we were informed all communication would be updated via the DODMRB site. And of course if the waiver is granted the academy would change its letter to a full appointment in its portal.

Waiver decisions are posted BY the SAs to the DoDMERB website and their Admissions portals :wiggle:

So is there no way to "appeal" a rejected waiver? My doctor wrote a summary letter that explained most of my DQs, but it wasn't accepted so I don't think any of the waiver authorities would be able to see it. I don't want to risk not turning it in if it affects the decision. Should I just email it to them (I sent a separate email with a similar question but only one of three waiver authorities responded)?

Rejected waivers can be appealed.
ALL documents should be sent to DoDMERB for reposting. Waiver authorities will NOT look at anything that is not in the DoDMERB system. :wiggle:

What about the situation of AFROTC candidates -- DS only received an email from waiver authority informing him to check DoDmerb portal for waiver decision, but didn't receive the result on the AFROTC portal.

Good luck to your DS. Stay hopeful. Obviously, every case is different, but I am aware of numerous high school football players getting waivers for concussions, both for ROTC and SAs. One was by USAFA for a candidate who missed significant amount of school and stopped playing football (continued to play hockey).

ROTC waiver decisions are posted to the DoDMERB website, both national and campus based applicants. :wiggle:

My daughter received a NROTC scholarship months ago and just two weeks ago got a DQ for a concussion she had back in her freshman year of high school. She was out of school 2 days and has stayed an honors student, athlete, worked, and more. It never got in her way until now. She's been in touch with her DoDMERB contact sending new medical forms and an updated impact test to prove that she's not hindered by this in any way. Last night she sent a note to @MullenLE to hope to move this forward in a positive way. As the parent I've stayed out of the way letting her manage all of this but with the clock ticking on decision day for colleges I'm out of my mind stressed for her. What can I do? What can she do?

Mr. Mullen is a rock star and you are doing right to have DD take charge and stay out of the way. Your role is support in the background, counsel DD and step and fetch as DD directs (and book doctors appointments).
