Chances of getting into NAPS instead of Service Academy?

Apologize for the self-centered post-- So far I think NAPS would be my best bet as a way to get into USNA, if any at all. I participate in 3 varsity sports (one going to states next week), different summer programs, girls state, sea cadet with high leadership, and lead organizer position in volunteer community renovation project. However I won't lie, my high school grades aren't that great overall in math at all. I'm actually repeating a course that was originally advanced because I failed it, but I've now passed out of the class with an 80. Overall HS transcript notes my current GPA is at 3.3, but there's room for improvement as a junior. Is it possible that with a 1350 SAT score I would still have a chance at NAPS or even the academy? Wiki says NAPS doesn't accept students with any passed failed classes, but also must have a GPA >2.2. Additionally, with these details would I be appealing to alternate colleges to then apply to transfer over to USNA? I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic and be real with the situation.

I understand that no one can accurately provide detailed insight except for the Academies themselves, but I'm so grateful for any thoughts provided.

No one can say for sure what makes someone qualified for the SA or not. If the SA believe that you would be a good fit for them, but only your academics lack, then they will send you to the prep school. But be advised that you never know what exactly the SA are looking for. I know someone who ranked top 3% in their class with straight A's, multiple varsity student, tons of volunteers and leadership but they weren't offered admission. There are things that SA are looking for and we ordinary people will not know what those are.

With that being said, I would still give you hope for the prep school and even the SA. But also know that you might not be accepted into those programs and might need a plan C. I wish you the best

A new thread is not likely to get better answers

So you have meh grades are weak in math and got a low B in a math course you just repeated. You are not a recruited sports type nor a prior.

I think you should also be considering your plan B and C as you continue to apply to a SA.

Really top grades grades in stem courses after a year of local or community college then apply to a SA ———-plan D.

Good Luck

Alright I'll tell you this. I got 1230 in SAT and 3.84 GPA and C in Calc but I got into NAPS this year.
I think the biggest thing is taking hardest classes. I do have a lot of redeeming qualities but its rly case by case
I know they review it on a case-by-case basis and all, but I'm curious to know what your ECAs and Athletics were.

Thanks so much for this- I'm so excited for you! Quick question for you- did you have a nomination?

My DD's SAT/GPA are similar to picklerick. Her Calc and Physics grades were barely a C. She's a three varsity sport athlete (captain of all three teams) and JROTC cadet (top five cadet). She also works as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and pool operator. We've got our fingers crossed that her NAPS LOA received two days ago will turn into an offer once she's cleared by DoDMERB. She received a nomination for the USMMA, not for USNA.

you can't get into a prepschool without a nomination
I don’t believe this is true for NAPS. Do you have a primary source reference?

While at NAPS, attendees must re-apply for non minatuons fir the next cycle.

Hmm. i guess its not for everyone but for people receiving LOAs i thought it was required

USNA is free to require whatever they wish.

I combed through the NAPS website and last year’s class brochure (updated every year for incoming NAPS class in the spring), and did not see a requirement for a nom in hand to be offered NAPS. Page 8 has details of what is required to move on to USNA, including clearly directing NAPS appointees to start applying for noms for the next cycle before they report to NAPS.

I don’t know what the LOA says, but Admissions can change it up as they wish. Read any directives for clarity, and call and ask if something is not clear.

From the brochure:

Admission to NAPS* If you apply to the Naval Academy and are not offered a direct appointment, you will be considered for admission to NAPS. Civilians selected to attend NAPS must enlist in the Navy Reserve prior to reporting to NAPS in July.

AND IMPORTANTLY:

The Superintendent of the Naval Academy determines the admission standards for each midshipman candidate. (Note, I would have added the word individually to the end of this statement.)

It seems if one completed all of the application requirements, but did not get a nomination, then yes, you can be considered. If you did the same and received a nomination then you, too, are eligible. The bolded text pretty much gives the Supe free reign to pick whomever they want, provided they have a completed application in by Jan 31st with or without a nomination.

Interestingly, I could not find what the Asterisk (NAPS*) was referring to in the brochure.

My DS has a MOC nomination and was offered an appointment to NAPS, in lieu of the USNA. He will accept. He also received a NROTC-Marine Option scholarship as well.

Also, I sent an inquiry to NAPS to see what day I-Day will be. For direct entry high school students, it will be Tuesday, July 25, 2023. The actual reporting times for each cadet will be sent later, and they advised to check their Facebook page for updates.

Good luck.

Congratulations on your son’s NAPS opportunity.

“NAPSters” are Midshipman Candidates, I believe. I don’t know if the Coast Guard attendees are Cadet Candidates, but those would be the only cadets at NAPS.

Your son should soon have access to his class’ edition of the annual booklet. It should be updated soon.

He can get started on re-applying for Sen-Rep noms as as soon as those sites transition to Class of 2028 cycle.

Congrats to your son!

there is a NAPS offers thread. I invite you to put your DS son info there!

As usual Capt MJ, you are correct. Coasties are cadet candidates while at NAPS or any other prep school.
