Does anybody know if I can still receive chapter 35 benefits if accepted into USMA?? I have 24 months of benefits left. For those of you who don't know what chapter 35 is, it's educational assistance for veteran dependents.

I believe you could use it for Grad School, assuming the Army doesnt cover it some how. But there is likely some kind of time limit to check on.

Yes, I have until July of 2027 to use it. Just wasn't sure if I could receive it at USMA. I am receiving tuition exemption from the National Guard right now and I still get it.

You should email your RC and ask, he can give the best answer.

I don't mean to be upfront, but have you researched USMA? There is NO Tuition or fees, and you are paid as active duty. You CANNOT use VA benefits at any of the military academies. You can save what you have left to use after your Service Obligation if you still have time, but USMA is paid for by your service.

I think there’s a maximum number of monthly payments. Check with your local VA coordinator. For military retiree-parents with children going to college, there’s a required update in eBenefits website listing the name of college to continue receiving the monthly dependent compensation.

Review this resource, pages 9-10, particularly the item about members of the Armed Forces not being eligible.

If there is a VA community center near you, stop in and check with the VA benefits counselor. Or, your county probably has a certified VSO (veteran services officer) working in a state/county veterans’ affairs/veterans’ agency/veterans’ bureau (states call their state veteran departments by different names).

It’s a Federal VA benefit, so they determine eligibility. This is where going to the primary source for an accurate opinion is critical, especially if there are any exceptions.

My oldest 2 children both received chapter 35 DEA benefits. It’s available until age 26 unless you join the military (Service Academy), in which case the benefit can be extended to age 31. It is eligible for graduate school.

For what it’s worth, most county VA rep’s and VSO’s have no clue with regard to Chapter 35 benefits. The VA eduacation representative at my VA medical center had to call the regional representative with questions. It’s a benefit that’s not utilized often.
PM me if you have specific questions.

Good Morning. No you cannot receive your Chapter 35 benefits while at USMA. You can use it later for grad school.

I am fully aware that there are no tuition or fees at USMA. I was asking because who doesn't want free money?

I’m sure you didn’t mean this the way it sounds but be gentle/careful with the idea “free money”. Of all VA benefits the Chapter 35 benefits are for those who have paid the highest price. The benefit was certainly earned and you should make the best use of it.
