Checking status on the admissions portal?

Can someone explain this a little bit more to me? In another thread it was mentioned that this could possibly be the first place you might learn of your acceptance or rejection. I am having trouble figuring out where this is after logging on.

First notification is to your MoC. They may, or may not call you, but have a week to do so. After the week passes they mail the BFE out. Sometime after the BFE goes into "snail mail" they update the portal. Depending on where you live, the portal might update before the BFE arrives. Everything I've seen from stalking the threads leads me to believe that very few people find out from a change on the portal, usually a call from MoC or a BFE comes first.

Incidentally. Some posters have called their MoC, instead of waiting for a call. If you choose to go that route, don't ask for the MoC (unless you know them very well), ask for the staffer who handles nominations for the SA's. The candidate should be the one to make the call, not parents! Have all questions scripted before time. I wouldn't call before Wednesday or Thursday of each week because that seems to be when the MoCs are notified. Be courteous of course. Understand that they may not choose to tell you if they do know, especially if the actual MoC has asked that they make the calls personally. The MoCs are not notified if you are NOT selected. What would probably be best is an e-mail to the staffer, if you have their e-mail address or can get it. Good Luck, and happy "stalking!"

The above timeline works fine for the vast majority of appointments (Congressional/Senatorial); however, I suspect that there will be no call for appointees for some of the other nominating categories (Presidential, MOH, ROTC, etc.). My DS first discovered his appointment last year (Class of 2015) by noting the change on his personal portal. The words, “Appointment Offered”, were added along with a short list of new requirements. He had a Presidential nomination. His BFE arrived the following day. Check that personal portal daily, but not hourly!
 
E-Mails from the candidate works best. If the MoC or staffer is not calling USNA, they may not find out real soon. If the MoC's office is very busy, maybe USNA couldn't get through, or maybe the MoC office hasn't had time to check. Or maybe they won't have time to check when you call (they may be busy working on important legislation). And what if they tell you they haven't heard, you're right back where you started. So my advise is to e-mail first, a simple couple of sentences asking for any status. And Falcon's correct, IF there's a presidential, or superintendent, or anything other than MoC, you'll just have to wait for a BFE.

The person you DO NOT want to call unless you need to check on paperwork, is the counselor assigned to the candidate. If every candidate called their counselor there wouldn't be time for them to do their work. Again GOOD LUCK! :thumb:
 
Don't contact the MOC to find your status and here is why:

(1) If the MOC knew, they would have called you. It is VERY RARE that a MOC staffer would receive this information and not turn it around, because all of them want to share in the pride in LETTING THEIR CANDIDATE KNOW! It isn't as if the MOC (actual) is going to delay calling the candidate for a few days, because they know that the BFE is going to be mailed!!!

(2) If they don't know, USNA isn't going to be that more upfront about it then with a candidate. See previous posts where USNA told the MOCs that the slate hadn't been reviewed. Odds are that the MOC will be told the slate hasn't been reviewed, there hasn't been a decision, etc.

(3) There are 1-2 USNA Admissions staff members who work nominations and appointments. Therefore, even if you have less candidates call, but all of the MOC staffers did, then there is no time for those folks to do their jobs because they would be answering phone calls/emails ALL DAY.

Please do not create more work for your MOC and Admissions folks. If you haven't heard, you need to sit back and relax. What I am getting at is that communication with the MOC isn't going to turnover anything new. And the worst case scenario is that you receive your BFE -- without a phone call --- just as if you were charged to another nominating source.
 
With regards to point 1, antidotal examples on the USAFA side suggest that it is not VERY RARE for a MOC to not contact the candidate. After DD patiently waited several days for MOC to notify her, she called the local MOC office, and the staffer pulled her file and replied "oh, yes, congratulations, I have an email here saying you received an appointment." There are several instances on the USAFA thread where candidates did not receive a call and only found out they had an appointment after they called the MOC.

That said, I agree with the gist of the message: Try to be patient and let the appointment notification system work the way it was intended. The MOC and their staff are busy. The only point I am making is that there are indeed a number of MOC's who will not contact you. So if you don’t receive a call, don’t give up hope. The BFE may arrive, albeit a week later.

Interesting to hear that.
It obviously happens, because we have have candidates, as well, who have said they never received a notification. I still think, that for the most part, most MOCs do try to notify their candidates.

Maybe "rare" wasn't the best word choice.

Where can I find the "portal?" I didn't see a section on the CIS site or DodMERB. Maybe there's another one I don't know about.

I don't believe that the on-line candidate portal for USNA has a status noted.
Unless someone can clarify that for me and others. I haven't seen anywhere on the portal a candidate "status"
 
Would it appear under "Candidate Bulletins?" Is the portal everyone is referring to the Candidate Information System link?

USNA CIS/portal never updated indicating DS's appointment, only the nomination(s). DoDMERB never changed either (other than to say "qualified").
 
USNA CIS/Portal

Has anybody else noticed the new portal when you go to Admission to check your status.
 
Likewise can't find the candidate portal - only the BGO and Congressional staff.
 
Candidate Portal

The website for USNA has changed. You can't get into the candidate portal anymore. How do you now access your information? I was going to have my son email his admissions counselor for an update on his application. Does anyone know how to access the info?
 
BGO question

hi... I heard a rumor that BGO's have access on a website to know if a candidate's file has been evaluated yet? is this true? I understand that they may not know the actual decision, but can they see that the file has been reviewed or not? thanks in advance for the info!
