Any doubt or reservation in regards to West Point was eliminated by the outreach, spirit, empathy, and awesomeness of the Class of 1978! To think that my son will potentially serve in that capacity, or will be surrounded by cadets who will, is inspiring! Decency and leadership in it finest and purest form!

Truly a big family of generations !!!!

I was so moved by the involvement and support that Class of "78 provided to my family this week! An amazing group of grads. My son is truly in the right place. The best advice my son received was from them.

Dropping off our new cadet on R-day at the United States Military Academy was an experience fraught with mixed emotions — pride, apprehension, and a sense of the unknown all swirling together. As a parent, it's a moment of profound transition, watching our child take their first steps into a world of discipline, duty, and rigorous training.

Walking down the stairs towards Eisenhower Hall, felt like a solitary march, akin to the "Green Mile" — a path leading towards an uncertain future, marked by both challenge and growth. The weight of the moment is palpable, shared by every parent and new cadet present.

Amidst this whirlwind of emotions, there was sudden shift as members of the Class of 1978 stepped forward. Their presence is like a beacon of understanding and reassurance amidst the storm. These alumni, veterans of their own R-day decades ago, exuded a sense of camaraderie and empathy that instantly lightens the atmosphere.

Their greeting is not a formality; it's a genuine expression of support and solidarity. They remember what it was like to stand in those shoes — the uncertainty, the anticipation, the mix of nerves and excitement. Their warm welcome is a powerful gesture that bridges the gap between generations, offering both cadets and parents a glimpse of the supportive community that awaits within the Academy's walls. One after another "Congratulations!", "Welcome, you must be proud!", "You made it!" "Congratulations on choosing Army over Navy. You chose well!!" again and again.

In their words and actions, the Class of 1978 transforms the solemn walk into a procession of hope and possibility. They share stories and songs of their own journey, anecdotes that resonate with our new cadet and my wife and I, illustrating that while the path ahead is challenging, it is also filled with opportunities for greatness and achievement.

Their graciousness and empathy changed the narrative from one of apprehension to one of potential and achievement. They instilled a sense of pride not just in the institution, but in our cadet who will call it home for the next four years. Their presence transformed the Academy from a formidable institution into a supportive community where extraordinary accomplishments are not just possible but expected.

As he was ushered forward, he carried with him the encouragement and wisdom of those who have walked the same path before him. The Class of 1978's welcome has set the tone for his journey, reminding him that while The Long Gray Line may be tough, he is a part of a legacy of resilience, excellence, and camaraderie that will guide him through every challenge and triumph ahead.

Thank you to the Class of 1978!
