Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

Got the QNV letter. Fun new acronym at least.
I haven't checked the forum or this thread in forever! At least I've been staying busy having fun this spring break

What a Friday April 1st no less...

Tough day yesterday for the Stalker community. But there is always a mix of good and not so good news. Two folks got a BFE (so things are not totally settled out there), but lots of TWE's. Sam-IA got a TWE and was shortly thereafter contacted and told he was appointed:

I'll keep putting wood on the fire until all of the stalkers come home. Best!:thumb:

Mom of Candidate 2015

DS got the TWE QNV letter yesterday... Letter says in bold that he will be notified immediately if another candidate declines... I'm not sure if this means a decline from our slate or from national pool...

We took the day to regroup. I think I was more devastated that he was... :(

DS quickly focused on plan B for now...

I needed comfort food big time so took DS to Korean BBQ (his fave) and just had our weekly night out together. He prayed before our meal and was grateful for plan B and for a very loving and supportive family... He is truly amazing! This is his first application and I hope he decides to apply again.

Congratulations to all who got their appointments, best to all with the TWEs. These young men and women are all superb kids! They have such great hearts to want to serve our country! They will succeed anywhere they go and get to their goals somehow. God has His hands on each of them so we just need to find the best other path to get there...

So I will check in with all of you later... Thanks for all the wonderful support! See you at the other threads.

Tough day of mail yesterday. A few of my free agent friends from prep school got the QNV letter yesterday as well. I felt it just as much as they did and it was a tough one. Sorry to all those who got one. I know very well the feeling. But don't bottle it up let it out! And never give up! Congrats to those who got the BFE I will see you in June

I guess in our case. No news is good news. But it does keep us on the mailbox stalkers list.

Hello everyone. No kiddo in the AFA hunt or AFROTC even, we're Army, but I've started following your thread while waiting for AROTC boards. Just wanted to chime in and say congrats to those with the BFE and prayers for the TWE's that the path forward becomes clear and positive. Best wishes to all of you and especially the parents:thumb: This is an amazing group of kids-you all did a great job:thumb:

We did the same with my daughter! For her it was off to the frozen yogurt place. She has embraced her other options. She will not reapply because it is too hard to walk away from her scholarships. It looks like she will go into biomed engineering at Lehigh and will not go military.

I wish all the very best and hope they follow their dreams. Third DS who is twelve has told me "I will not be applying!" so it looks like the end of the line for this family. Best to you all.

We just got back from DC and went to the post office this morning to check our mail that was on hold, only to find the TWE. Our DS who is visiting grandparent's called us to see if we had heard from the USAFA so we told him what we had and he asked if Dad could read it to him over the phone (that was hard to listen to) I guess now we will focus on plan B and work on things to re-apply for next year's class.

He was taken back, but he remains positive. I pick him up at the airport on Monday....that will be a sad/long ride home.

Congratulations to everyone who received appointments!

We are still holding out hope for maybe a FFS or AFPREP.

Take care everybody!

I just want to say that these past few days of the Mailbox Stalkers has been truly heartbreaking. I don't have a kid in this race, but I've been to drawn to this thread for weeks by your pure excitment and anticipation. I think you all had a ton of people out here who would check back regularly thinking... I've got to see if "so and so" had anything in their mail today, are they in??

Some truly amazing kids have been turned away do to the limited number of appointments this year. I personally want to give my congratulations to the kids and parents that received their BFE's!! And to those families who received the TWE QNV, believe me when I say that we ALL felt your pain and disappointment. I wish you only the best in whatever path you choose.

What a great group of people! I don't think FalconFamily could have predicted the bonding that would come from this thread.

SMNE

I'm going insane. Just glad to not have gotten a TWE by now.

That is how I felt yesterday. That is until I got the text from DS telling me he got a rejection letter, and that is all the text said. I had to call him to get the rest. Then I get home only to find out that there was a BFE in the mail too, but from MSOE with his housing information. It must have been a total shock to open the mailbox and see a big envelope only to also find the TWE from the Academy. It breaks my heart.:frown: He has not told anyone and doesn't want to talk about it now. We thought for sure he was a shoo-in and were told by others that have kids there now that he would get in. He has an AFROTC scholarship so all is not lost, just a little heartbroken right now. Hopefully he will come around soon.

So true. That is why I keep the fire stoked...May is still a month off and hopefully we will be seeing some positive things happening as we get closer to summer - but clearly this has been a tough week.

So I got a TWE yesterday and was pretty bummed. It's devastating knowing that you are qualified, but the only reason you can't go is because of no vacancies. My question is does anyone know the chances of still getting an appointment due to declines from other appointees? When will people hear about prep schools? Lastly does anyone have good information about applying for ROTC and recieving a good scholarship?

ROTC scholarships have already been done. It closed January I think. Our son actually received a 4 year AFROTC scholarship which he had already accepted. The paperwork says you can accept it and it even if you are given an appointment. Once you take the Oath the scholarship is revoked. I assume this means that some ROTC money goes unused since they don't find out until July that scholarships are going unused. I could be wrong about that though. His ALO was on him from the very beginning to make sure he applied for ROTC as well as the Academy. I am very glad he did. Sorry I don't have better news.

Hi Flath, sorry to hear about your notification.

1. No one really has any idea of the number of declines. As it is the USAFA offers more appointments than they have room for 1120, because they anticipate declines. But no one has any idea if they will have enough declines to drop below 1120 so that they can offer appointments to others (it is also not a straight forward process of getting appointments from the National Wait List).
2. Prep and Falcon Scholars will start getting notified once the dust settles (end of April?).
3. It is too late to apply to AFROTC this year. You would be looking to next year for a scholarship. There is also another thread in this forum for ROTC folks.

Best of luck!

USAFA_Flath - DS talked to his AFA admissions counselor yesterday. She said she wished they didn't even put that sentence on the qualified but no vacancy letter telling candidates they may be called to fill a decline. She said the chances of getting a phone call to replace someone who declines are not impossible but probably not realistic.

BTW- Regarding AFROTC, if you missed the deadline for the scholarship you can still join and try for a tuition waiver (this was relayed to us by my son's ALO). These are apparently handled separately from scholarships.
