There's also appointees who will change their mind and will decline the appointment, or they will get injured or have other circumstances which might make them ineligible for this year, so the admissions panel will move on to the next qualified candidate. Don't lost hope!

USAFA Appointee 2017

Keep hanging in there - our DS got the call with the offer of appointment today from the Congressman's office. So the Academy is still processing and making offers.

Prep School Appointees

Good afternoon everyone,

While we are still waiting, I have a question that I hope doesn't sound altogether ignorant/dumb etc:

I was wondering why cadet candidates at the prep school find out about appointments later than direct applicants (early May as opposed to February/March/April)? Does the Academy reserve a certain number of appointments for this category?

I am aware that prep schoolers receive nominations via the typical sources (Congressional/Presidential/Vice-Presidential), but would their appointment fill that slate? (i.e. Congressional slate of ten: 2 prep school, 1 falcon foundation, 7 high school)

This may seem like a dumb question, but it is one that I have yet to be able to find an accurate answer to.

Regards,
CAPChief

+1 :thumb: I also would like to know the answer to this one.

I'm not at USAFAPS but here on the forums it has been said by a couple of kids who are there, that they won't find out until sometime in May, whereas everyone else is supposed to find out sometime before national decision day (May 1st.)

Some will inevitably also hear after May 1st. DD found out May 2nd 2010 of her appointment. Had 7 days to decide. There are people who do not consider USAFA their first choice. They will decide not to accept and then they will appoint another until the class has been filled.

So when a candidate declines an appointment, does it go to the next candidate on the congressman's list or is it just the 1st in the national pool, then the 2nd, etc?

Reviving the post, sad to see it so far down the list :)

It's a new week. How is everyone?

Yes, it feels late. You are doing really well if you are just NOW feeling uneasy :) For our fam, this has been a faith-walk, we have learned loads and grown in trusting Him.

One thing that helped me and the DS was lining up all the other plans in case the Academy dream was not for this year. Research helps as knowledge is empowering to take away the fear of the unknown. Have you checked out prep schools if you get a Falcon Foundation Scholarship? Have you looked into the cadres of other schools you might attend?

Connecting with other posters with whom you have affinity helps. Christcorp was incredibly encouraging, Pima incredibly informative.

Remember, if you got this far, you are an amazingly talented and hard-working individual. It is easy to put your whole worth in getting that appointment - but it is just one reflection of your worth.

Still Hope

I'm starting to become uneasy. March has come and gone with no indication of appointment. Should I be worried?

I'm with you on that, however in red on my online application page it says,

"IMPORTANT NOTE – The Air Force Academy is still reviewing files for offers of appointments. Candidates will know their status for direct entry into USAFA by the 15th of April. Appointments to our Preparatory School and Falcon Foundation Scholarships will be determined in April and May. Please refer to the Admissions Time Table on page 1 of your instructions to candidates."

Less than two weeks away to know if that is accurate, but I think it should be.

I just called the admissions office, and my counselor told me that yesterday they were informed that we should all hear something by the end of this week. Good luck, everyone.

Soccer guy, what area are you from?
I'm not sure if they do appointments by area, but just in case!

I think things well get back in gear now that admissions is back from spring break.

Notified as in by your nomination/appointment source? Because from every Prior Service I have met that has acquired a direct appointment, they were notified through the Portal, which seeing the deadlines flying around for April 15th and such makes me have quite a few questions.

I'm not sure. I have some of the same questions as you.

Knowing when doesn't change the outcome, so I guess it doesn't matter all that much. It just helps me be less stressed in waiting if I have a timeframe to which I can look forward.

Only reason I need to know when is because Active Duty have to PCS instead of just going, which means outprocessing our base which can be a 1-3 week process. And being in Alaska makes it a bit worse regarding travel and shipment of household goods.

The way it works is if you are selected, the Academy gives a grace period of I believe seven days to give your nominating source the courtesy of notifying you IF THEY WANT TO. They are not required to notify you. Once the grace period is over they will update your portal with your notification.

My son's MOC did not notify him. He received his appointment letter and a congratulations letter from our MOC on the same day his portal changed.
