Class of 2021 R-Day

Thank you both! Lots of good information. One more question, what/when is plebe parent weekend? Is that A day?

Plebe Parent Weekend is in March. Upperclassmen are dismissed on Friday; Plebes stay Fri-Sat (banquet on Sat night), and are dismissed on Sunday. Usually all cadets return the following Sunday.

R-Day - Reception day (drop off for new cadets prior to Beast)
A-Day - Acceptance day (after successful completion Beast)
PPW - Plebe Parent Weekend (after successful completion of 1st semester)

Does anyone mind elaborating on WP reimbursing an appointee's flight? This is the first time I'm seeing this information, and I could use some insight onto the validity and details of such an arrangement. Simply linking me to another page or thread suffices as well. Thanks.

I don't think it's generally available online public information, but remembering from my son's entry, we were told that USMA will pay for the initial trip to report and after graduation, the trip to his first duty station (two trips that are travelling on orders). The package that came after appointment with all of the information on vaccinations, law enforcement reports, packing list, etc. said that he had two choices: he could book a ticket through USMA's travel agent, Wagonlit Carlson, or pay himself and turn in receipts. Coming from the west coast, he was offered the option to fly in the day before and be put up at a Newark Airport hotel, sharing a room with another new cadet; cadets travelling alone this way were put on a bus up to post early the next morning. I don't think the package itself had any details on turning in receipts for flight and hotel, but he was given the paperwork at some point during those first couple of days, and did not have receipts with him, so he missed that window. I suspect that he could have also gone to the treasurer's office later, but it was a little too far out of daily routine and standard operating procedure for him to handle until much later in the year.

Incidentally, son said afterward that, in retrospect, he would have preferred saying his goodbyes at home and going by himself, to meet classmates a little ahead of time and get his "game face" on. Also, a classmate on this forum reserved a room at Turner's, a restaurant not too far away, for a buffet dinner the night before for any forum members and families who wanted to come -- something to think about?

If you have not gotten the info yet: flight and hotel the night before are reimbursed but no guarantees the money will ever hit their account. It's a black hole from m experience. Plebes navigating WP treasurer info is not high on their priority list and I guess you submit and hope the money comes in their account. WP sets up rooms at hotels near airports night before and bus CC's to post in the morning. I think for many it's a daunting 48 hours but I am sure for some it's a walk in the park. My kid did fine at Beast but was the hardest thing he ever did. Was super homesick. Had to see the Cadet in the Red Sash like 12 times. I think if you can handle the academics you will be fine...if you want to be there. Two cents.
