Welcomed news! Albeit a short notice surprise, it appears efforts to ease restrictions and allow limited visitation for full and conditional appointments to visit have succeeded. Those with appointments and their families now have an opportunity to visit for in-person AEP.

DD received email on 8 Mar 21 extending invitation to register for one of Multiple Tues and Thurs dates listed during last weeks of March until 1 Apr 21. Multi-faceted Agenda. What

Be on the lookout if interested/applicable.

This is surprising, especially since the cadets at CGA aren't yet vaccinated. Does the agenda have them attending classes or interacting with current cadets? I understand wanting to visit, but it seems like it puts the current cadets at more risk. Any significant covid outbreak could derail spring sports, limit liberty, and cause classes to go back to all online instead of hybrid.

My apologies, my intention was to inform not create anxiety. This is obviously far more than just a visit and major decisions will turn on this critical opportunity.

I know for certain CGA has been struggling with how to best balance the safety of the cadets with the needs of the future and I’ve no doubts that they are making every decision about the visit with safety and Covid protocols in mind and they make clear in registration that there will be strict adherence and additional details for attendees.

No mention of sitting in classes (highly doubtful) the Agenda includes:

  • Tour the Coast Guard Academy campus
  • Learn about cadet life from cadets themselves
  • Prepare for Swab Summer
  • Explore the leadership development experience
  • Discover athletic, music, and club programs
  • Meet future classmates

It is definitely a balancing act between maintaining the Covid ‘bubble’ and securing your future cadets. USCGA will never be able to satisfy everyone. My DS was at the academy last week for a visit as he is currently in CGAS at NAPS. I think there is real concern that this years appointees will include many that have never even visited the academy and that will pose some unique challenges.

I'd say you're right. My son has never visited the Academy and he will be part of the next incoming class. At this point, travel from CO to CT seems too risky and he's already accepted his appointment. He knows he wants to be a CG officer as a career so he's just assuming it'll all work out.
Did your DS get to see the new weight room? If so what were his thoughts?
My son is so stoked about the new training facility. Watching the video, he excitedly explained to me that they have "the good treadmills." My son is a runner so I guess that's something he's tuned into.

Real concern by who?

What unique challenges?

The real concern should be over introducing who knows how many strangers from all over the country exposed to who knows what in their travels to a corp that finally has covid under control and is just now returning to some sense or normalcy. How does leadership tell the corp they aren't allowed to travel for spring break and two weeks later let kids fresh off planes, trains and automobiles onto campus?

They had better not be allowing these kids into chase hall or any academic buildings - they need to be kept away from the cadets.

You will have an influx of 200-250 people the majority of whom won’t know the layout whatsoever of the the campus. You will also be missing the ‘shock & awe’ of the physical AIM experience so SWAB summer is going to be a massive adjustment for all apart from the scholars. Also current cadets have had off base liberty so are already being exposed - if adequate precautions are being taken, which it sounds like they are, then there shouldn’t be a significant increase in risk.

The cadets have had *very limited* off base liberty and only starting a week or two ago. Even then, they were only able to go off base with other cadets. They have to stay outdoors and can only get take-out food. For today through Sunday only they are allowed to see parents (if they have tested negative before coming into the state) or sponsor families, but they still have to stay outdoors. USCGA has had a few significant outbreaks of covid this semester so what Korab said is true...they are only just now getting a handle on it. USCGA took strict precautions starting from the beginning of the semester and are testing all cadets at least twice a week, yet they still ended up having outbreaks.

My daughter said the cadets were shocked to see the NAPS cadets there last week. @sanman - Do you know if they PCR tested the NAPsters upon arrival? They have the facilities to test on campus. I would hope that if they allow 2025 applicants to visit, that they would covid test each of them before bringing them on to campus.

The NAPS cadets were allowed off based liberty for 2 weekends in October. They had no Thanksgiving liberty, had a short Christmas liberty and no spring break liberty. For the two weekends they were allowed liberty in October they were not allowed to go into any buildings even to eat. There are about 30 NAPSTERS and they were at the academy for about 6 hours. I will also add that on their return from Christmas break they were tested for COVID and confined to their rooms for 10 days. Since that time they have not been allowed off base at all until their 6 hours at the Academy.
