How important is it for an applicant to be a leader in a school club? Could this make or break an application?

No, this will not make a break an application.. Your leadership activities should consist of a lot more than a leader in school club. This would be just one tiny aspect of your leadership score. You've got to do a lot more to demonstrate leadership - Boy/ Girl State, organize a drive in your school for a cause you feel passionate about, captain of your team, etc.

Well, it depends on what else you've been involved in and where else you've held leadership. If the only thing you've done in high school is participate in a club, then no leadership could definitely hurt. But, if you've held leadership in sports, church, band, work, or other areas then it probably isn't a deal breaker. Again, just my take.
