I was wondering if there’s coffee available for plebes during plebe summer. It’s a little thing, but I want to cut off caffeine before the summer to be in top shape if I have to.

Yes. Caffeine is readily available in many forms to all MIDNs. Between regular coffee and nitro cold brew in King Hall - to easy access to a myriad of energy drinks in vending machines throughout the yard - you can get all the caffeine that you want. There is a coffee shop at the Mid Store as well as canned coffee and energy drinks in the "grocery" area of the store. During Plebe Summer you may have limited access to The Mid Store (or limited time to actually go there). There is another coffee shop in Nimitz Library - but again - you may have limited time to go there during PS.

From last year's PTR :

"Some suggestions for things to include in care packages:
– Individually wrapped granola bars or energy bars
– Powdered sports drink mixes, NO CAFFEINE"

Well then, times have changed. I stand corrected !
I should have guessed that "if it makes your life any easier or gives you comfort in any way, it must be prohibited". Silly me.

Do they take all the energy drinks out of the vending machines during PS?

I will just say then - after Plebe Summer - that place runs on caffeine.

This was my son’s worry 3 year ago, as well. He found out you won’t need caffeine during PS. But since then, he drinks coffee like water. He was so excited when he finally rated a coffee maker in his room Youngster year. King Hall coffee is decent and he carries a giant thermos cup into class.

Correct. No caffeine was not allowed during '25 PS (2021). However we inadvertently sent a couple of Clif bars in care pack that had caffeine (did not even know that it existed). DS quickly squirreled those to the back of his stash and pulled out when desperate.

DS is anxious to have access to something other than KH brew next year. He is still not sure on his companies guidelines for youngsters.

He discovered the coffee bar in Nimitz and has treated himself a few times during AC year.

Yep. I heard this is good coffee, too. Plebes might also want to find a sympathetic upperclassman to get coffee from the Company wardroom. When my DS was a plebe, he was allowed to store leftovers in the wardroom fridge and sometimes had coffee access. Probably company dependent.

Caffeine has never been allowed over Plebe Summer (if plebes got it in the past then their detailers F’d up), but once the ac year hits the plebes will have ample opportunity to drink coffee. The coffee in King Hall is not very good, but many mids keep a coffee machine in their room and most company’s wardrooms have a Keurig. There’s a coffeeshop at both the Mid Store and the library, which a lot of people like too. I’m personally part of the old-fashioned “save 3 dollars a day by making it yourself” crowd.

I think the point, is not whether its still there or not….but rather that plebes during plebe summer only, have no access to it. Going to the MidStore for allowed supplies is a big highlight of the summer, as i recall. Alumni or Thornton got a pic of my guy in the store and it was an amazing ‘find my Waldo‘ moment. They were happy and smiling!

As a fellow caffeine addict, i feel for OP. And that is a great idea to give it up well before you report. Unless you want to dump that pain/headaches/lethargy into your already miserable plebe summer. I wouldn’t recommend that. Good thinking on your part!

DS was a regular coffee and coke drinker his last year of HS. Once he learned that caffeine was off limits during PS, he cut both out after graduation. He survived.

Once AC year started he up again he went with the KH sludge. Now he is trying to only use the caffeine when absolutely necessary. In fact during Christmas break I made extra coffee the first few days he was home thinking he would want it, but he did not. He still enjoyed having coke from the fridge that he did not have to put money into to gain access. I am sure he still breaks into the coffee mode as needed these days.
