Color deficiency

I am under waiver review and DODMERB requested AMI for color deficiency. I failed the ishihara test in the first eye exam which resulted in the disqualification. I am wondering what other tests to request when I revisit the ophthalmologist in order to get qualified?

I applied to all of the academies. Waiver denied at Coast Guard. LOAs at Navy and West Point.

The Ishihara test is red-green, right? From my understanding, telling the difference between red and green are important for naval services and is a major disqualifier for unrestricted line (Don't quote me on that). Since the academy graduates are, for the most part, expected to service as unrestricted line, I would properly not keep my hopes up for a USNA or USMMA waiver.

I am not sure about USMA and USAFA.

My son is colorblind and received a waiver to USNA. My understanding is CG and MM will not waive this - but others can correct me.

For USNA there was no additional remedial action needed.

You will only be allowed to commission restricted line in the Navy or the marines. Once the waiver was granted, my son had to sign a document acknowledging this.

Ok this sounds hopeful! I’m praying it works out at one of them.

The Army typically sees fewer buoys in its day to day mission and has had lower thresholds for red-green colorblindness, but that's anecdotal and there are no guarantees. Good luck.

Yes, my color deficient ds had to pass the "vivid red-green" test for USMA. He is moderately red-green colorblind leaning toward severe and had no trouble passing it after he "bombed" the Ishihara test (in the words of the dr). Both of those were given at his DODMERB eye exam and no remedials were needed. He was medically qualified for both USAFA (no color requirements) and USMA, but he understands that being a pilot is not possible for him.

Is it possible dodmerb didn’t give me the vivid red green test first time around? I can see stop lights and reds and greens in real life but 4/14 on the Ishihara. I have my AMI exam set up in 2 wks. I hope I can pass the vivid red green test

It seems strange that they wouldn't have done that test once you failed the Ishihara, but it is possible. I think they just showed ds some cards that were a solid color and he had to tell what color they were. He said it was really easy for him. My ds was about the same as you for the Ishihara (he might even have gotten a 3, I don't remember exactly). We've known he was color deficient for years and knew it could restrict his future careers so we've always focused on what he can do vs. what he can't. DS#2 is mildly color deficient so it'll be interesting to see how he does on the Ishihara next year.

You said you applied to all of the SAs. Are you medically qualified for USAFA?
