Companies

Yes, 28th Company plays croquet against St. John's. The plebes used to serve drinks/sandwiches in mess dress during the event, don't know if they still do that.

3rd Company is in the 1st Regiment. It's the third one from the left. :p

Look at "The Herd"s Facebook page. Search for United States Naval Academy - Third Company
(posting Facebook links is against the rules)

Maybe @Capt MJ can help with this one - what happened to the legacy of the old 6th Batt companies that don't exist anymore (31-36)?

The @IronmanDaremo post above made me think of that. In my day, The Club was 34th company - "Club 34". Did the new 28th inherit their space in 8th wing and the nickname as well?

I arrived at USNA just after they had gone back to 30 companies from 36. Everything was already done and re-shuffled space-wise and mid-wise. I don’t know what endured and what changed WRT company names.

I personally was never in 25, but it has historically been notoriously difficult for plebes. They live on 6-4, so no one really visits unless they have a reason because their deck is up a lot of stairs and is not a thoroughfare. However, they are also part of 5th Batt, which gets pretty chill towards the end of the year
This past year the "Cub guppies" aka the Plebes of 25th Co. had to earn their Blue and Golds in first semester and then had to earn the title of "Bearshark" in the second semester. The Plebes were also responsible for guarding the Bearshark during all home football games. Given the scramble of the C/o '25 and the shotguns of '23 and '24, not sure how much legacy will be transferred to C/o '26.

and yes the Bearshark is real---Google it.

As I understood it at the time, USNA actually eliminated companies from throughout the Brigade, not just 6th Batt and then renumbered as necessary and also reshuffled spaces. To be honest I remember the company areas being a bit strange dues to many changes for one reason or another. For instance during my time, First company was on 3-0 and maybe a little on 1-0. 1-1 was 3rd Company. 1-2, 3-2 and a shaft of 3-3 was 2nd company. 1-3 and 3-3 was 4th and I think 12th company was also on part of 3-3

My (aging) recollection was there was a period of shuffling companies around while they refurbished Bancroft Hall (a several year project) around the early 2000 time period. I did my initial BGO training back then, --Brigade was down to 30 Companies by then, so they could shut down a whole Wing at a time. That's when they added Air Conditioning and the modular Closet and Rack systems that they have now.

This happened in mid-90. I believe it happened in 1996. The lowest ranked company in each Battalion basically was scrambled to the rest of the Battalion. Also the company nicknames was something that happened a decade or more ago. The company mascot thing is a newer thing. Definitely not done when I was there. I think it had some good things to help rally a company around.

I would think company culture is as random this year as anytime of recent past.

Classes of 23 and 24 were shotgunned from all companies last year. 25 scrambled from another company.this year. Very few folks would have 2 years with same company, so roote are really shallow.

Anything on 27 Company?? (Where they live, any cool stuff, etc)
29's youngsters will be joining 27. They are getting a new marine CO this year whom no one has met, and have a Navy senior chief SEL. They live on 8-1, which is nice because it is not visited very frequently, yet you don't have to climb up too many stairs.

27 is known as the Mighty Ducks. They are known as a difficult company physically for plebes. I remember seeing them in the front leaning rest during chow calls frequently during first semester, and having beat downs on Sunday nights after the end of liberty. They were pretty big into ground fighting during plebe morning workouts.

However, I wouldn't worry too much. Plebe year--especially first semester, is difficult for most plebe companies, just in different ways. Traditionally, 27 had a pretty physical approach to plebe training, while other companies emphasized lifestyle punishments such as not being able to "rate their deck," which means that they weren't allowed to go back to their rooms or the company area from breakfast to study period, or not being able to rate blue and golds.

Was “rate their deck” officially condoned? Whilst at one level it is a “lifestyle punishment“ it also seems tantamount to ordering plebes not to carry out their duties i.e. study for an exam, complete assignments etc.

There aren't really codified punishments for training the 4/C. There are punishments I had, but other companies did not and vice versa. Usually, the training staff will gain inspiration from what happened to them as Plebes. The training officer (1/C in charge of training for the whole company, but works mostly with the plebes) will usually get the sign off from the CO before implementing something like that. It is usually due to poor room standards, gear adrift, etc. The rationale being you shouldn't rate what you don't respect.

On ordering plebes not to do their duties, you are just ordering them to not be on deck. All of the academic buildings (including Nimitz Library) are open until 2200 during the week. So, there are plenty of places to do your work, study, etc. It just won't be in your room. Study Period is mandatory for Plebes (as in they have to be doing something academic), but the requirement for them to be in their rooms during study period is not there.

So they have to carry all of their books/materials with them from when they leave their room in the morning until evening so that they can study for classes, do projects, homework, etc?

Does not seem to be conducive to academic success from what I can see.
And how do they change out of sports gear & prepare for evening meal formation if they can't be on deck until study period? What about evening chow calls?

All solveable problems if you think ahead..maybe extreme, but would be effective deterrent on a short term basis. Probably better than "betting your a$$." (Back in the day, if Plebe was trying to bs on their rates, and Upperclass asked if they would bet their A$$, losing Plebe would have to get upperclass permission to sit down, go to the bathroom, etc. I'm sure that was never sanctioned.
