There is no way to prepare for the abrupt and shocking change in direction, no matter if they have made Yard visits, attended NASS, talked to midshipmen. They are in the military now. They are adults. It is real. Their natural resilience will sustain them, as well as their equally shocked classmates to their right, left, front and back. Those impossibly confident, squared-away and competent detailers were plebes themselves not so long ago. Many of these plebes have never failed before or been at the bottom of the performance food chain. They will learn to fail, recover, persevere, succeed. All of this has a purpose, to bring out inner grit. It just isn’t very clear when you’re in the middle of it…
Thank you. We think it was the yelling at her that shocked her the most even though she knew it would happen.

Being able to function and execute tasks and routines, prioritize, communicate - in a loud, chaotic, high-stress operating environment - is what pilots face in cockpits when things are going wrong with alarms blaring and decisions in the next few minutes determine survival chances for you and the people you are responsible for. Insert any military operational or “routine” training evolution for “pilot in cockpit.” Knowing you can tune out the unnecessary, focus on what’s required, find an inner calm that allows you to function in the middle of all that craziness and not give in to panic but rise to the occasion - priceless. There is a “why” behind all the “silly stuff.” This is what she signed up for, to develop her potential to confidently handle anything thrown her way and to take care of her people, not just a BS from a special place and a job after graduation. Being yelled at - she’ll return the favor in a few years.

There is a “why” behind all the “silly stuff.”
A couple of hours after the first emergency that I had to handle at sea, I was able to reflect on how some of the Plebe year stuff
helped prepare me for what I had to handle.
The memorization of various pieces of data and then being able to coolly use them while under great stress. people yelling, etc was
a part of the plebe system that helped me greatly. A fire and explosion onboard during one of my first nights as CDO also tested
those abilities.

I want to hear that CDO story some time.

DH swears by his PS and Plebe Year as what enabled him to get through some of the experiences he encountered.

Knew I could find the patch if I searched enough. Purchased at The Mid Store on I-Day. Back to regularly Scheduled thread.

Apparently, way back when, mids were company patches on their Ike Jackets. The was a push to bring that back during my MIDN career, but it was quickly shut down since one would have to buy a new Ike when they graduated.

We wore company patches on our Ike jacket and there was a clear circle marking where the patch once was once we removed it. Suffice to say, you are correct…had to buy a new one after graduation.
