"Competitive Candidate"

Yesterday I received a call from the head admissions person from West Point telling me I was a "competitive Candidate" based off of my SAT scores, and he had me schedule an interview with him. My SAT score wasn't very high,(1870), but did anyone else receive a call??

I also wanted to know if it helps to have a general or an admiral write a letter of Recommendation for me?

Was it COL McDonald? More than like you were contacted by an admissions liaison officer (MALO or FFR) in your area. If you have a good class rank, 1870 is good enough to make you "competitive." The initial evaluation rely heavily on SAT/ACT scores. If available and active, local liaison officers will interview "competitive" candidates in the area.

As for a letter of recommendation, it depends on. If the letter says you are a good kid or restate your qualification/accomplishment, it won't help. So a typical letter of recommendation I read is something like, I am so and so (General), this kid is great, do good in school and sports, active in community, will make a great Army officer. Whats' missing? How does this general knows this kid? If above letter had a strong connection (i.e. church, boy scout, school, internship, etc), it will be more creditable, otherwise no.

1) recommend changing your profile name to something less identifiable
2) that individual was probably your local Field Force Representative FFR who do most of the interviews so unless someone else on this forum is from your same area, they probably didn't get that call
3) competitiveness is more than a factor of your test scores. Your class rank, leadership roles, and quite frankly where you live affect your competitiveness in terms of your chance at admission.
4) save your Flag officer recommendations for your nomination applications. They aren't considered in the admissions process (your FFR could even be a retired general).

Yes that's was their title and no it was a different liaison. Would it be better to work on the math or reading section of the SAT?

You can either:
1. Open a new account with a new name and simply use that
2. Contact Tactical Nuke and ask him to change your screen name.

Since USMA is primarily an engineering school, I'd work to improve your math score.
And yes, change your screen name asap.
