Confused???

How exciting for you! Congratulations! If you don't mind our asking ( no pressure!) what were your SAT/ACT scores and your weighted/unweighted GPA? Any other factors such as recruited athlete, etc.? Did they tell you what was the deciding factor to change you from CGAS to direct? Just want to get an idea of what kind of numbers would be considered borderline CGAS/direct appointment.

Hello! Thank you so much :D In regards to the application, it is VITAL that you apply early in the process. Whether you choose to do Early Action or Regular, it is important that you submit the application early! I learned the hard way when I submitted my application in Early Action the day it was due. (basically too late) Although I thought I was pretty qualified, I received the CGAS option which wasn't bad (of course) but the Prep Option is made specifically for those with potential but lack either academics or physical fitness. Of course, the Admissions board moved me up after some people dropped. Lesson learned: ALWAYS turn in applications early.

My SAT score was a cumulative of a 2000. (Math 660, Writing 720, Reading 620). Although I took the ACT, I did not send it in because my SAT score was better than the ACT.

My GPA: Cumulative Weighted: 4.1 , Cumulative Unweighted: 3.8. I took a total of 8 AP classes and 4 IB classes.

I am not a recruited athlete but I know my extracurricular activities influenced the decision on my application significantly. Here is basically all that was on my application in the extracurricular part:

Tennis: Varsity Letter (3), Varsity Captain, League Champion Titles (3), All the awards from tennis (Coach's choice, integrity, involvement, teamwork awards...)

Clubs: President of Health Occupation Students of America (3), VP of the National Honor Society+group project leader, Science Olympiad (4)+ 2nd place in Regional Competition, CSF (achieved the highest honor)

JROTC: Flight Commander (in charge of all Junior Year Cadets in the program+Flight of the Year+Air Commando Association Award, American Veterans Award, American Legion Award, Cadet of the Month (3).

Misc: Congressional Award (Bronze Medal and Silver medal), Volunteered at Spring celebrations, Military Appreciation Day, Race for the Cure, JROTC, Tennis, Korean School...

That was, in a nutshell, all of what I had accomplished throughout highschool that I included in my Application.

In terms of what the deciding factor for moving me up from CGAS to Direct, I have no idea- nor did they tell me what made me stand out. However, I'm sure what they do for all Waitlisted and CGAS appointees is that the Admissions Board ranks each applicant in terms of how great they are as an applicant. Perhaps I was ranked higher than other CGAS appointees which is why I got moved up.

Ultimately, there is no limit on how "great" your application can be. Try out different clubs, try different leadership roles. Try doing something outstanding! Try getting the best grades as you can! Academics are a HUGE part in the application- as they should be. Even that 0.1 difference on your application can potentially affect the decision that the Admissions Board could make.

Hopefully that helped answer your question somehow! If you need anything else, please feel free to reply! Sorry for the late reply!

Thanks for sharing.
I don't think PFE was mentioned but that is another important item which can bump a candidate up or down. The average numbers for EA PFE have gotten higher over the past few years. 230 this year, 229 last year, 223 class of 2018.

Admissions likes to see PFE scores greater than 200.

Oh wow... "Confused???" is how WE feel after reading all your accomplishments. I don't think you were lacking in either academics or physical from what I see. I'm not sure why you were even CGAS to begin with. If it was just an issue with getting the numbers, perhaps waitlisted for direct, but not really CGAS material, unless they wanted higher SAT math scores. (It doesn't seem like they Really care about the writing score either, although I can be wrong.) That's all I can think of if I have to be REALLY picky. Perhaps CGA IS really THAT competitive, and the reality of it hasn't sunk in yet for us. Either way, it's great that you ended up where you belong. :) Congratulations again, and 'hope you're getting excited for your R-day! Good luck!
