Need some information please. My son applied for a NROTC scholarship and was notified in Dec telling him congratulations that he was being considered for an immediate NROTC scholarship. He then interviewed further and was sent the paperwork for the ISR which we both signed and sent back in early January. We never heard back from the coordinator despite phone calls and emails regarding the outcome and status. Now he saw the portal that says he didn't get anything. Confused as to why this happened and what to do from here.

Did you keep copies of the signed paperwork? If so, I would have your son visit the nearest NROTC unit at a college and show the docs to the staff there. He can then inquire on what happened.

If he indeed lost the scholarship but is still eligible to reapply, then he can still sign up for NROTC at college and participate as a College Programmer and compete for a National Scholarship or a "Sideload" scholarship.

It sounds like your DS was being considered for what is known as an ISR- Immediate Scholarship Reservation. The commander of each regional recruiting district has a limited number of these that they can award. Different recruiting districts handle these differently. Some decide who they want to award them to before notifying the applicant. Others will interview several applicants before deciding who to award the ISRs to. It sounds like your DS may have been in a district where the commander interviewed several applicants, but decided not to award him one of the ISRs and awarded them to other applicants. In this case, your DS' application would have gone back in the candidate pool for general consideration. It sure seems like, if this is what happened, your DS should have been notified by the recruiting district that he was not selected for the ISR and his application would go back in the general pool, just as a general courtesy. I might suggest he contact the regional recruiting office and inquire about this, if the ISR sounds like what you are referring to.

You mentioned that you and your son signed paperwork. Do you have copies of that paperwork and what does it say. My DS was awarded an ISR immediately during the interview by the CO of our recruiting district. Before we left the interview, he already signed paperwork indicating that he was accepting the ISR. I also had to sign because he was not yet 18. For us this occurred in January, but he did not receive official notification from the Board until late March. Again, check to see exactly what the paperwork said....was it indeed an actual notification of an ISR or did it indicate that he was a candidate being considered but no firm offer.

Similar situation here: DS was verbally offered ISR right after interview in mid January, however the portal did not reflect such and we went into the worrying and anxious period for about a month until he received the email of "congratulations..." followed by email from a few detachments and colleges recruiting him to join. The final paper package came in mail in March and the "Certificate of Achievement" signed by Rear Admiral of Navy came in April.

My belief is that if you had ISR, you have the scholarship. Navy does not lie !!! Just sit tight and wait, or call to ask.

Definitely call to ask, esp with the May 1 deadline approaching for colleges soon
